Aerodynamics Presentation-Compressed

This document discusses the principles of flight stability. It defines static stability as an object's initial reaction to being moved from its original position, and dynamic stability as its subsequent reaction. It also defines three types of stability: directional (yawing), longitudinal (pitching), and lateral (rolling). The document explains that directional stability is provided by fins generating a side lift and yaw restoring moment. Longitudinal stability is provided by the tailplane generating a lifting force with a large moment arm to counteract pitching. Lateral stability refers to an airplane's tendency to return to level flight after being displaced from side to side.

Principle of Flight
Stability
If the body move from its original position and slowly and gradually comes back to it’s
original position. The body is said to be stable and phenomenon is called stability.

Unstable
If the body is moved from its original position and it keeps on moving away from original
position. The body said to be unstable.

Neutral
If the body is moved from it’s original position and it never comes back to its original position but
gain a new position it’s called neutral.

BASIC STABILITY
 Static – initial reaction
 Dynamic – subsequent reaction

o Static stability does not guarantee dynamic stability

o Dynamic stability guarantees static stability
o We cant even talk about dynamic stability as long as static stability is not
guaranteed

Types of stability
1. Directional stability
2. Longitudinal stability
3. Lateral stability

Directional Stability

Moment “the turning effect of force"

Moment= force of light × perpendicular distance btw force and fix point
M= F.d
 As long as the aircraft is going straight &levelled all the four forces are
balanced to each other
 If something causes to produce unwanted yaw the fin would start producing an
angle of attack (lift) and as a result side lift will be generated by the fin.
 The side lift will try to restore the aircraft to its original position by producing
yaw restoring moment.

The yaw restoring moment can be increased by

 By increasing the value of side lift which can be achieved by increasing the are of the fin.
 By increasing the moment arm which can be achieved by increasing the length of
fuselage. After of the centre if gravity (CG)

Longitudinal stability

 As long as aircraft going straight and level CP=CG and all the forces Re
balanced to each other
 If something causes an aircraft to pitch up, tail plane would start producing an
angle of attack and as a result small lift will be produce by a tail plane
 The main wing lift is time to rest able the aircraft whereas, at tail plane
(horizontal)lift would try to stabilize the aircraft to it’s original position by
producing pitching restoring moment.

 Although the list produced by the main wing is bigger but it has lesser moment
arm on the other hand the lift produce on the tail wing is smaller but it has
large moment arm due to a larger distance btw CG and tail. The aircraft will be
successful restore to its original position

Longitudinal stability can be increased by

 Increasing the value of the lift produced by the tailplane which cam be
achieved by increasing the area of the tail plane
 By increasing the moment ar, which can be achieved by increasing the length
of fuselage aft of CG

Lateral stability
Lateral stability is the stability displayed around the longitudinal axis of the airplane.
An airplane that tends to return to a wings-level attitude after being displaced from a level attitude by
some force such as turbulent air is considered to be laterally stable.
