INTRODUCTION
This handbook is designed to be used as a reference for the C -130E / H model aircraft
systems. All systems have not been covered due to the numerous models and the variety
of missions of the aircraft, but we have attempted to include all the major systems. Due to
the extensive amount of modifications to the H2 and H3 model aircraft, they have
not been included in this handbook.
As a training aid , this book has the distinct advantage of having a lot of pictures you may
need in one book. It is intended to help you as a quick reference to find a particular
dimension , station number, access panel , component location , etc. Use it whenever it can
be helpful to you , and mark in it to meet your own particular needs .
Its ONLY purpose is to give you a quick reference for system operations and functions.
THIS HANDBOOK IS NOT TECHNICAL DATA, AND WILL NOT BE USED AS SUCH .
Nor, can it be used as a reference for accomplishing a task. If you use it for the purpose
of becoming more familiar with the aircraft and its systems , it will have served its purpose .
If you believe that an area has been left out that you think should be included in the
handbook, feel free to call us at the numbers listed in this handbook.
NOTE :
The T.O's used for this training book are subject to change. The use of Job
Guides may take the place of some Technical orders.

GENERAL AIRPLANE
The Lockheed C- 130 is an all metal, all weather, high wing , long range monoplane .
The primary mission of the C- 130 is to provide rapid transportation of cargo and
personnel by landing or by aerial delivery. The airplane can land and take off on short
runways, and can be used on landing strips such as those usually found in advance
base operations. It is capable of operating at maximum takeoff weight from outside
airfields as short as 3800 feet. The airplane can be readily converted for evacuation
of litter patients.
The design maximum gross weight is 155,000 pounds , ( 175,000 pounds wartime) with
a normal landing weight of 130,000 pounds . The operating weight is approximately
80,000 pounds.
FUSELAGE
The fuselage is a semimonocoque design and divided into a flight station and a cargo
compartment. Seating is provided for each flight station . The cargo compartment is
approximately 41 feet long , 9 feet high , and 10 feet wide . Loading is from the rear of
the fuselage. Both the flight station and the cargo compartment can be pressurized to
maintain a cabin pressure - altitude of 5000 feet at an aircraft altitude of 28,000 feet.
WINGS
The full cantilever wing contains four integral main fuel tanks and two bladder- type
auxiliary tanks. Two external tanks are mounted under the wings . This gives the C- 130
a total usable fuel capacity of approximately 9680 U.S. gallons .
EMPENNAGE
A horizontal stabilizer, vertical stabilizer, elevator, rudder, trim tabs , and a tail cone
make up the empennage . This section consists of an all-metal full cantilever
semimonocoque structure . It is bolted to the aft fuselage section .
POWER PLANT
Four Allison turboprop engines are attached to the wings . The engine nacelles have
cowl panels and access doors forward of a vertical firewall. Clam- shell doors are
located aft of the vertical firewall. Air enters the engine through a scoop assembly at
the front of the nacelle .
1-1
General
Aircraft
PROPELLERS
Four Hamilton Standard electro - hydromatic , constant-speed , full feathering,
reversible -pitch propellers are installed on each engine .
OIL
The C- 130 has four independent oil systems with a 12 gallon capacity for each engine .
Oil is serviced through a filler neck located on the upper right engine cowling.
FUEL
The fuel system consists of a modified manifold - flow type incorporating fuel crossfeed ,
single point refueling (SPR) and defueling, and fuel dumping . Latest USAF versions
incorporate blue foam for fire suppression .
ELECTRICAL
AC electrical power for the C- 130H model is provided by five 40 KVA generators, 4
driven by the engines and one driven by the APU . On the Emodel, the power is supplied
by four 40 KVA engine-driven generators, and a 20 KVA generator driven by the ATM .
DC power is provided from AC sources through four 200 ampere transformer rectifiers
and one 24 volt, 36 ampere-hour battery.
1-2
C-130 E / H Handbook
HYDRAULIC
Four engine -driven pumps supply 3000 psi pressure to the utility and booster systems .
An electric AC motor -driven pump supplies pressure to the auxiliary system and is
backed up by a handpump. The hydraulic system maintains constant pressure during
zero or negative “g” maneuvers .
OXYGEN
Both models have a 25 liter liquid oxygen ( LOX) type system which provides for 96
man - hours of oxygen at 25,000 feet . It uses diluter - demand automatic
pressure-breathing regulators. Portable units are also provided . System pressure is
maintained at 300 psi .
FLIGHT CONTROLS
The primary flight control system consists of conventional aileron , elevator, and rudder
systems . Hydraulic power boost is incorporated in each system .
WING FLAPS
The wing flaps are high - lift, Lockheed -Fowler type and are of conventional design and
construction. Normal operation is by hydraulic motor. Emergency operation is by
manual crank.
ANTI-ICING
Engine bleed air is used for anti- icing the wing and empennage leading edges , the
radome , ( Radome Anti-icing may be removed in some models , check with aircraft
forms ) and engine inlet air ducts . Electrical heat provides anti-icing for the propellers ,
windshield , and pitot tubes .

C-130 E / H Handbook
This chapter covers parking and mooring, jacking and leveling, and servicing. The
appropriate technical order shall be consulted for exact procedures .
Axle jacks may be used under the built-in jacking points on the base of the landing gear
struts if the aircraft gross weight does not exceed 130,000 pounds . They may also be
used under removable jack and tow fittings which can be installed on any main gear
strut.
Primary jack pads are located on each wing and on the nose section of the fuselage.
Since nose jack points are located on both sides of the nose , manifold jacks must be
used to prevent twisting of the fuselage nose section .
A leveling plate is provided in the fuselage on the left side just aft of the wheel well. A
plumb bob is installed on a fuselage ring just above the leveling plate . Fwd and aft
markings on the plate are in 1/4 degrees. The airplane is level laterally when the plumb
bob is on the center line of the leveling plate. A person should be stationed at the
leveling plate during jacking to see that the airplane is jacked in a level position . T.O.
1C- 130H-2-07JG-00-1 covers Aircraft jacking .
Under normal parking conditions, chocks are the only movement-restraint items
required. However, when high winds are expected , it becomes necessary to moor the
airplane. The ideal situation is to moor the airplane directly into the wind , but this is not
always possible .
Aircraft parking ramps normally have a grid pattern of tie down rings available for
mooring . T.O. 1C- 130H-2-10JG-00-1 and the OMMS T.O's explain the ideal mooring
method when the grid pattern is to be used as well as mooring methods used on
unpaved areas. Several tie down fittings are on the airplane's nose , tail , and both wings .
When the airplane is moored , considerable slack is to be provided in the wing mooring
lines , but little is permitted in the nose and tail lines . The slack in the mooring lines is
to prevent structural damage to the wing should the opposite main landing gear struts
or tires go flat.

SERVICING
Replenishing points exist for fuel, engine oil , starter oil , GTCIAPU , ATM , hydraulic fluid ,
propellers, oxygen , fire extinguishers, accumulators , and drinking water.
The airplane may be refueled with either the single-point refueling (SPR) receptacle or
directly into each tank by using a hose and the tank filler neck . Single-point refueling
requires that electrical power be applied to the airplane . The airplane can be defueled
by using the SPR receptacle. Instructions for these types of operations are printed in
the 2-2 series T.O. and checklists .
Propellers must be serviced individually with approximately 26 quarts of oil . See T.O ...
1C- 130H-2-12JG- 10-2 for the proper servicing procedures.
GTC , APU , and engines are all serviced with engine oil , and should be serviced
immediately after shutdown .
The airplane has individual reservoirs for the utility, booster, and auxiliary hydraulic
systems . Detailed instructions for servicing these reservoirs are found in the
1C- 130B-2-2 and the 2-3 T.O's .
The ATM on the C- 130E uses an oil bath for lubrication . Instructions for servicing are
included in the 1C- 130B-2-2 T.O ...
Landing gear struts use air and oil to cushion landing and taxi loads . See T.O ...
1C- 130B-2-2 for specific servicing instructions .
Main gear tire inflation depends on the airplane gross weight and landing surfaces.
This information is contained in T.O. 1C- 130B-2-2 . The nose wheels are inflated to
60 +/- 5 psi for all gross weights and both must be within 5 psi of each other. If the
pressures are unequal , nose wheel shimmy could result .
Many points on the airplane require lubrication by any one of several methods . These
points and their lubrication intervals are outlined in the appropriate T.O's .

HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS
A booster hydraulic system , a utility hydraulic system , and an auxiliary hydraulic system
comprise power supply sources for all hydraulic components operation on the airplane .
The booster system furnishes hydraulic power to a portion of the surface control boost
system only. The utility system normally operates the landing gear, wing flaps, brakes ,
nose wheel steering, and a portion of the surface control boost system . The auxiliary
system normally operates the ramp system and provides emergency pressure for brake
operation . On E -model aircraft AF62-1784 and up , and H-model aircraft, the auxiliary
system also provides pressure for emergency extension of the nose landing gear.
CHARGE
3-1
Hydraulic Systems
The utility hydraulic system operates from the output of No. 1 and No. 2 engine-driven
hydraulic pumps and supplies hydraulic power to the wing flap hydraulic motor, the
main landing gear hydraulic motors , the nose landing gear hydraulic system ,the main
landing gear brakes , nose wheel steering , and to a portion of the aileron , rudder, and
elevator control boost system .
The engine-driven variable displacement pumps are supplied hydraulic fluid under
electric suction boost pump pressure from a reservoir mounted on the left side of the
cargo compartment. The engine-driven pumps are provided with internal control
mechanisms to vary their output volume with system demand and control pressure to
maintain approximately 3,000 psi output pressure . If one of the pumps quits operating ,
a corresponding low pressure warning light will glow. The pressurized output fluid of
each pump passes through a filter, an electrically-operated shutoff valve , and a
one-way check valve before merging as system pressure.
The one-way check valves provide individual pump failure warning by preventing the
operating pump pressure from actuating the pressure warning switch for the failed
pump . Fluid supply and output of the engine-driven pumps can be cut off by actuation
of the fire handle or engine pump switch for that particular engine . The supply fluid and
output is cut off by the closing of electrically actuated shutoff valves. External
connections are provided so an external supply of pressure may be used for ground
maintenance operation of the system . A ground test valve is incorporated in the system
so that system pressure from the auxiliary hydraulic system may be used if desired in
ground maintenance operations .
A single nine -port ground test valve is used which provides supply, return , and case
drain functions . Four filters are used in the system to provide protection from foreign
material contamination . A pressure relief valve provides protection against system
overpressures . An accumulator is installed in the utility hydraulic system pressure line
to provide a damping effect during demand and pressure fluctuations.
A sight level gauge mounted on the reservoir gives a visual indication of the reservoir
fluid quantity. Provisions for control and monitoring of the utility hydraulic system are
all located on the hydraulic control panel on the copilot's instrument panel .

Hydraulic Systems
The system is mounted in the cargo compartment and may be manually or electrically
operated from the ramp control panel , or electrically operated from the hydraulic control
panel . A handpump in the system provides an operational source of system pressure
for ground or inflight operation . A direct measuring pressure gauge located near the
handpump shows system pressure . A remotely controlled pressure gauge located on
the hydraulic control panel also indicates system pressure .
The electrically -driven system pump is supplied hydraulic fluid from a reservoir, and is
a variable-volume output type which will maintain approximately 3,000 psi output
pressure .
Check valves allow handpump pressure to operate the system when the handpump is
operated and the electric pump is off. A manually operated shutoff valve is provided
to furnish overboard drain provisions. A manually operated nose landing gear
emergency extension valve connects the system to the nose landing gear system on
E -model AF62-1784 and up , and H-model airplanes. This allows auxiliary system
pressure to be transferred to the nose landing gear uplock and to the down actuating
cylinder for emergency extension of the nose gear.
Two filters provide protection from foreign material contamination within the system .
An accumulator is provided in the auxiliary hydraulic system on E-model aircraft. The
accumulator takes some of the starting load off the auxiliary hydraulic pump. A cooler
assembly in the system permits continuous pump operation. H -model airplanes have
an air-cooled auxiliary hydraulic pump installed which permits deletion of the
accumulator and cooler from the system .

Each engine consists of two major assemblies : a power section and a gearbox section .
The power section contains a four-stage turbine which extracts heat energy to drive a
14-stage compressor and the engine's accessory section. The reduction gearbox contains
the necessary gears for speed reduction to provide a 13.54 : 1 reduction between the engine
output shaft and the gearbox output shaft. With a normal engine speed of 13,820 RPM ,
the propeller shaft turns at 1020 RPM .
Each engine is installed in a nacelle structure which supports the power section while
installed on the airplane. Access to the power plant for maintenance is available through
access panels located on the upper portion of the nacelle. Large access panels are located
on the left and right lower portion . A fuel regulating system is provided to control and deliver
the fuel from the main supply to the fuel manifold and fuel nozzles . The fuel is sprayed
into six burner cans for combustion .
The engine is equipped with a fire detection and turbine overheat warning system . A
continuous loop sensing element is routed throughout the areas of the accessory and
compressor sections. A fire or turbine overheat condition will be recognized by a steady
or flashing light respectively on the appropriate fire emergency handle on the main
overhead instrument panel . In the event of either a fire or turbine overheat condition , a
fire-isolation /fire -extinguishing system is provided .
Each engine is equipped with an engine ice -detection and anti-icing system , which will
detect the formation of ice on the engine compressor air inlet structure . When an icing
condition is detected, the system can automatically open a valve which will allow hot bleed
air to anti- ice the engine and compressor inlet. The system can also be operated manually .
A nacelle overheat warning system is installed in addition to the turbine overheat warning
system . The nacelle overheat warning system actuates warning lights on the copilot's
panel when an overheat condition exists in the nacelle area forward of the vertical firewall .

The APU is installed in a compartment forward of the left main landing gear in the wheel
well fairing. It provides bleed air for the operation of pneumatic equipment and shaft
horsepower to drive its integral 40 KVA AC generator. The APU is capable of being
operated either on the ground to supply bleed air and electrical power, and in flight to supply
electrical power only at altitudes up to 20,000 feet. Fuel is supplied by gravity feed from
the No. 2 main fuel tank . The APU is operated from controls located on the flight station
overhead control panel. The air inlet door of the APU is automatically actuated open during
APU starting. For ground operation, the door opens to 35 degrees. The door actuation
circuit is conditioned by a signal from the landing gear touchdown switch to drive the door
to a 15 degree intermediate open position for operation of the APU in flight.

FUEL SYSTEM
The fuel system is a modified manifold -flow type, incorporating a fuel crossfeed, a single
point refueling and defueling , and a fuel dump system . The system provides fuel supply
for the four engines and the gas turbine compressor. It is adaptable to a number of flow
arrangements . On all Air Force C- 130's , foam is installed in the internal and external tanks .
Foam absorbs explosion , prevents overpressure damage . This provides the airplane with
an explosion suppression capability which alleviates the possibility of airplane and
personnel loss due to projectiles striking the airplane .
FUEL FLOW
Each engine may be supplied fuel either directly from the respective main fuel tank or
through the crossfeed manifold system from any tank .
All fuel tanks may be refueled or defueled from a single point ground refueling and defueling
receptacle located in the right aft landing gear fairing . Fuel is routed from the single point
receptacle through the refueling manifold . Each tank has a separate supply line from the
manifold and each supply line has a float- type shutoff valve. Refueling is controlled at the
single point refueling control panel , located above the refueling receptacle. As an alternate
method , tanks may be fueled separately through a filler opening in the top of each tank,
with the exception of the auxiliary tanks .
In order to comply with the intent of primary fuel management and provide the greatest
flexibility for maintenance and operations , standard ramp fuel loads in excess of 28,000
pounds should be loaded as follows :
- Outboard main tanks , 7,500 lbs each
- Inboard main tanks , 6,900 lbs each
Any additional fuel required will be put in the auxiliary tanks
This loading will satisfy the minimum requirements for primary fuel management , prevent
unnecessary fuel transfers, and prevent fuel venting problems in most cases .
Whenever the airplane is refueled immediately prior to flight, such as for enroute stops ,
the main tanks should be filled to SPR shutoff before fuel is directed into other tanks .
Operational commitments such as training requirements , availability of fuel service, or
planned landing criteria will in some cases dictate that these procedures be adjusted .
However, every effort should be made to comply with these guidelines to maximize airframe
life .

• Maintain a balanced weight, within 1000 pounds , between each pair of symmetrical
main and external tanks.
• When tanks are not to be filled to capacity, fill symmetrical tanks equally.
• When tanks are not to be filled to capacity, put at least 500 to 1000 lbs more fuel in
the outboard tanks than in the inboard tanks . (The exception to this rule is the
auxiliary tanks, which may be imbalanced without affecting aircraft primary fuel
management requirements ).
• Maintain a total weight of fuel in the tanks on one side of the airplane centerline, so
that it does not differ more than 1500 pounds from the total weight on the opposite
side of the airplane.
• The GTC uses gravity fed fuel from the crossfeed manifold .
• The APU uses gravity fed fuel from the No. 2 main tank surge box .
• Integral tank boost pumps operate on three -phase 115/200 volt AC power, with a
rated output of 6000 pounds per hour at 15 psi (Normal operation 15 to 24 psi) .
• Auxiliary and external boost pumps operate on three -phase 115/200 volt, AC power,
with a rated output of 6000 pounds per hour at 28 psi (Normal operation 28 to 40 psi) .
• The single point refueling system is designed for flows up to 600 gallons per minute
at 60 psi maximum .
No fuel leak of any kind is acceptable in an enclosed area and must be repaired
before flight. Wing leading edges and dry bays are examples of enclosed areas.
• Single point refueling gauges should agree within 100 pounds maximum with the
corresponding gauges on the flight deck fuel control panel .

INSTRUMENTS
Only those instruments which are not part of a complete system are covered under this
heading . For the description of instruments that are part of a complete system ,see the
chapter covering that system .
Ram air pressure and atmospheric pressure to operate the vertical velocity indicators ,
airspeed indicators , and altimeters are supplied by the pitot-static system . Two pitot
tubes furnish the ram pressure for the airspeed indicators , and four static ports furnish
static pressure for the airspeed and vertical velocity indicators and altimeters . Two
static ports are located forward of the wheel well fairing on each side of the fuselage .
The forward ports, one on each side of the airplane , serve the pilot's instruments ; the
aft ports, one on each side of the airplane , serve the copilot's and navigator's
instruments . On airplanes modified by T.O. IC- 130-1173 , a pressure transducer is
connected to the pilot's pitot-static system to provide differential pressure information
to the self-contained navigation system ( SCNS) .
The two vertical velocity indicators , one mounted on the pilot's instrument panel and
the other mounted on the copilot's instrument panel, are differential pressure measuring
instruments that indicate the rate of change in altitude of the airplane .
AIRSPEED INDICATORS
The three airspeed indicators , one mounted on the pilot's instrument panel , one on the
copilot's instrument panel , and a true airspeed indicator on the navigator's instrument
panel , are instruments which use differential air pressure to determine airspeed .
ALTIMETERS
The three altimeters , one mounted on the pilot's instrument panel , one on the copilot's
instrument panel , and one on the navigator's instrument panel are barometric-type
instruments measuring variation in pressure by means of aneroid units . The altimeter
setting is entered by use of a normally operated barometric set knob in the lower left
front of the instrument case . The altimeter setting appears on counters in the window
in the lower right of the display and has a range of settings from 28.1 to 31.0 inches of
mercury .
6-1
Instruments
Two free air temperature indicators, one on the pilot's instrument panel and the other
on the navigator's instrument panel, indicate ambient outside air temperature. This
temperature must be corrected for compressibility for true air temperature during flight.
The indicators are electrically connected to resistance bulbs mounted on each side of
the airplane. On airplanes modified by T.O. 1C- 130-1173 , the pilot's free air
temperature indicator is removed and the resistance bulb is used to provide outside air
temperature information to the self -contained navigation system (SCNS) . The copilots
free air temperature gauge has been moved to the pilot's instrumentation panel on
airplanes modified by T.O. IC - 130E -546 .
MAGNETIC COMPASS
ACCELEROMETER
A Type MA- 1 accelerometer is located on the pilot's instrument panel and gives
instantaneous as well as maximum and minimum readings of the g forces exerted on
the airplane. The gauge scale indicates readings of from plus 4 g's to minus 2 g's . The
maximum and minimum indication needles will remain at highest readings until the
PUSH-TO-SET button on the gauge case is pushed , then they will both return to plus
one g and will again register maximum or minimum readings of g forces until again
reset. The accelerometer is designed for inflight use only and does not accurately
measure g forces during landing .
CLOCKS
Three clocks are mounted in the airplane, one on the pilot's instrument panel , one on
the copilot's instrument panel, and one on the navigator's instrument panel .

ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
Power from these AC generators is used to provide electrical power for airplane use :
28-volt DC ; 200/115-volt, 400-cycle , three-phase primary AC ; and 115 -volt,400-cycle ,
single -phase, secondary and primary AC . The four engine-driven AC generators are
connected through a series of relays to four AC buses : the left -hand bus , the essential
AC bus , the main AC bus, and the right-hand AC bus . The relay system operates in
such a manner that any combination of two or more of the engine-driven AC generators
will power all four of the buses . If only one generator is operating , it will power only the
essential AC bus and the main AC bus . All inflight controls for operation of the electrical
system are located on the electrical control panel on the overhead panel in the flight
station .
EXTERNAL POWER
Both DC and AC external power receptacles are located on the left side of the fuselage
just aft of the battery compartment. DC power from the external source is supplied
through two current limiters to the main DC bus . Any DC electrically operated
equipment on the airplane , except equipment connected to the battery bus , can be
supplied from an external DC power source . The battery is disconnected from all DC
buses except the battery bus when external DC power is being used .
If the ATM is used to supply power to the aircraft, only the essential AC bus will be
powered. H-model aircraft 84-0204 and up have an AC bus tie switch that allows both
the essential and main AC busses to be powered.

RADIO -COMMUNICATION
The aircraft's defensive system protects the airplane against surface - to - air heat-seeking
and radar-guided missiles that may be encountered during routine and special operations .
Flares and chaff are automatically ejected, as required . The defensive system consists of
an AN /AAR -47 missile warning system (MWS) and an AN /ALE -40 countermeasures
dispensing system ( CMDS ) , both controlled by the navigator. Both the E and H-model
aircraft are equipped with this system as a result of TCTO 1C- 130-1323 .

( SCNS )
The SCNS is an integrated navigation and radio control system which provides three
independent navigation solutions , flight guidance information, and communication and
navigation radio control . The primary components consist of one bus integration computer
unit ( BICU ) , one doppler velocity sensor (DVS ), one inertial navigation unit (INU) , and three
integrated display computer units ( IDCUS) . The SCNS is also responsible for controlling
all navigation and communication radios. The control panel for UHF No. 2 and all VHF ,
HF , VOR , and TACAN radios have been removed and all radio control functions are
performed by SCNS components . The existing UHF No. 1 control panel is retained so that
the UHF No. 1 radio may be controlled by either SCNS or the present UHF No. 1 control
panel .

The radar set is designed to operate as a search radar, a weather radar or as a radar
beacon interrogator-receiver. When used as a search radar it displays a map-like
scope picture up to a distance of 240 nautical miles . When used as a weather radar it
displays storm fronts, heavy rainfall or other weather features with precipitation. When
used for beacon navigation it transmits an interrogating signal and then displays the
coded identification of the automatic beacon reply .

Primary flight controls (ailerons, rudder, and elevators) are actuated by hydraulic boost
units that reduce pilot effort. Initial movement of the controls by the pilot positions a control
valve which causes hydraulic pressure to move the control surface . A feed -back lever
provides the pilot with flight control “ feel”. In the event of total hydraulic failure, a bypass
feature of the hydraulic boost packages allow direct manual actuation without danger of a
hydraulic lock .
Hydraulic pressure from the utility and booster hydraulic systems is provided to tandem
actuators on the aileron and rudder and to dual actuators on the elevator. Should failure
occur in one hydraulic system , boost pressure willcontinue to be supplied from the other
system . This greatly reduces the possibility of a complete loss of control boost pressure.
FLAPS
Lockheed -Fowler type flaps deflect downward and extend aft through the action of
jackscrews connected by torque tubes to a single flap gearbox operated by a hydraulic
motor. Utility hydraulic system pressure is used to operate the motor and an emergency
hand crank is provided in the event of hydraulic failure . Emergency brakes are installed
in-line with the torque tube system on the outboard jackscrew actuator gear boxes to stop
flap operation, should an asymmetrical flap condition develop .
TRIM TABS
Electric motor-driven trim tabs are installed on the rudder, both elevators, and the left
aileron . The right aileron trim tab is ground adjustable only.

UTILITY SYSTEMS
The bleed air system consists of high pressure stainless steel ducts and shutoff valves
which direct the compressed air to the pneumatically operated systems of the airplane .
Compressed air is supplied to a bleed air manifold from the gas turbine compressor or
an external source when the airplane is on the ground . The bleed air manifold extends
across the leading edge of the wing . The bleed air shutoff valves are controlled by
switches on the pilot's overhead panel .
Engine starters
Air turbine motor ( E-model only)
Air conditioning
The ATM ( E-model only) is a compressed air motor which drives an alternator. Power
from the alternator supplies essential AC , and through transformer -rectifiers, DC for
ground operation and engine starting. The ATM is located in the forward, left wheel
well directly above the GTC unit. The ATM can be driven by compressed air from the
engines , the GTC , or an external source .
10-1
Utility Systems
The airplane is equipped with two independently operated air conditioning systems :
one for the flight station , the other for the cargo compartment. Both systems are
operated by bleed air supplied from the engine compressors. When the airplane is on
the ground , air may be supplied by the engines , GTCIAPU or an external compressor.
The temperature controls for each air conditioning system are located on the pilot's
overhead panel . In addition to maintaining the required compartment temperature, the
air conditioning system will remove excess moisture from the air before sending it to
the distribution ducts. The pressurization system consists basically of a cabin pressure
controller , outflow valve , safety valve and a manually actuated emergency
depressurization hatch . The pressure controller is mounted on the pilot's overhead
panel , and is used to select a cabin altitude from minus 1,000 feet to plus 10,000 feet.
The pressure controller sends a pneumatic signal to the outflow valve which causes
the outflow valve to control the amount of air escaping from the cabin . The outflow
valve is located on the forward right side of the fuselage under the navigator's table .
The safety valve is located in the aft cargo door. Its purpose is to prevent
over -pressurization . It also serves as a dump valve. The emergency depressurization
hatch is located aft of the center wing section , and is mechanically actuated by a
T-handle on the pilot's overhead panel .
OXYGEN SYSTEM
The C- 130 is equipped with a liquid oxygen ( LOX) system . The system consists of a
25 liter LOX converter installed in the nose wheel well, two heat exchangers, and ten
diluter-demand automatic pressure regulators. Six regulators are located on the flight
station . There is one at each crew station and one at each end of the bunk. Four
regulators are installed in the cargo compartment. There are two at the forward end
and one aft of each paratroop door. The oxygen system has a maximum supply of 96
man -hours . The oxygen system pressure is 300 psi .
A two bottle, two -shot Halon fire extinguishing system is connected through a series of
directional flow valves to each of the four engine nacelles and to the GTCIAPU
compartment. One bottle is discharged each time the system is actuated. Each bottle
is charged to approximately 600 psi , with nitrogen acting as a propellant. Individual
pressure gauges on each bottle show charged pressure.
A three-position ( No. 1 , OFF , No. 2) toggle switch located on the fire emergency control
panel controls the discharge of the bottles. The five plastic fire handles are mounted on
the fire emergency control panel . They operate emergency shutdown switches for the
GTCIAPU , the four engines , and position the directional control valves.

PROPELLER NOTES
Oil Leakage. There shall be no oil leakage from the propeller dome cap , dome to
barrel junction , barrel half parting surfaces, barrel blade arms , or the rear of the
barrel tail shaft extension during normal operation . During extreme cold weather, a
small amount of leakage is allowable from the barrel blade arms providing it stops
leaking after the engine has been run long enough to warm the propeller oil and
reseal the blade packing .
• Maximum acceptable oil leak from the prop control shall be one drop every 45
seconds (4 ounces per 24 hours) except there shall be no leakage allowed which will
cause a noticeable odor in the engine bleed air.
• Do not allow any leakage or spillage around the brush block assembly . Spilled oil
could cause the system to short out.

LANDING GEAR
The landing gear is a tricycle , steerable- type with dual nose wheels and tandem main
wheels. The nose landing gear is a caster type. They are hydraulically actuated and
electrically controlled and monitored . A hydraulic actuator retracts the nose gear forward .
Hydraulic motors power ballscrews which raise the main gear vertically into the wheel wells
in the fuselage . All landing gear doors are mechanically actuated by rods from the landing
gear struts. The main gear may be mechanically raised or lowered with a hand crank. The
nose gear can be extended with the auxiliary hydraulic system (or the forward cargo door
handpump on certain E models) in the event of utility hydraulic system failure.
The landing gear is normally actuated by utility hydraulic system pressure which also
provides pressure for nose wheel steering in the down position . A landing gear selector
valve is located in the cargo compartment and has provisions for manual override in the
event of electrical power failure.
2. On “ H ” model aircraft the selector valve maintains the up position as long as the
handle is selected to up . This allows hydraulic pressure to hold the gear up .
3. On all models the selector valve is detented into the down position so it will hold
toward down even if it loses electrical power.
BRAKE SYSTEM
Each landing main landing gear wheel has a high-pressure , low-displacement, multiple
disc brake. These brakes are controlled by the normal , emergency , and parking brake
systems and by the anti-skid system . The brake system for normal , emergency, and
parking consist of the following functional components : rudder pedals , brake selector
switch , parking brake handle , brake system accumulators , normal brake selector
valve, emergency brake selector valve , brake control valves , brake shuttle valves , brake
assembly for each gear wheel , brake pressure transmitter, and brake pressure indicator.

Due to the extensive nature of this topic, no pictures of wiring diagrams will be presented
in this chapter. Certain diagrams have been presented in the chapters of this book that
discuss the system . The following pages do contain some common electrical symbols that
you may need to read the diagrams properly . It should be noted that these T.O's are very
helpful when troubleshooting aircraft malfunctions, and you should become familiar with
their use.
