ROLE OF PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING 2
Introduction
Electric engineers deal in a wide range of fields including power, electronics, radio
frequencies, to controls. As a future electrical engineer, narrowing down my career to a more
specific field would be a crucial step. For instance, I could be more focused on Power
Engineering, which entails the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power.
Often, power engineers work at electric power plants when it comes to generating and
distributing large amounts of electric power. They could also work on solar and wind energy
plants, or the power electronics and battery. Another important area that involve electrical
engineers is the field of electronics, which is entails using electrical components to design and
improve various devices such as computers, phones, and radios among others. However, to
perform and characterize circuits, systems, and signals, as well as ensure high quality control of
these systems, engineers need an in-depth understanding of probability and statistics. With
regard to this, this paper discusses the application of probability and statistics in electrical
engineering with key focus on quality control in electrical engineering projects as well as its
significance in molding the skills and abilities of electrical engineers, especially once they start
their career upon graduating from college.
The Use of Probability and Statistics in Electrical Engineering
Application in Quality Control
Electrical engineers are expected to partake in coordinated collaborations with other
engineers, senior leaders, and actual clients to discuss and evaluate the quality of a given project.
In this regard, they would require adequate skills in probability and statistics to be able to carry
out quality assurance in the field of electrical engineering. One way to apply probability and

statistics as an electrical engineer working on quality control would be in research and design
aspects. In this regard, statistics would enable the electrical engineer to characterize
communication and information systems as well as other processes and products. In the
development and testing of systems and processes, engineers spent time on computation and
reporting on results of analyses on existing projects and solving production problems. Probability
and statistics skills would enable them complete the required data analysis and project possible
outcomes. Since electrical engineers also engage in estimation where they estimate the resources
or technology needed for potential projects, probability skills would equip them with the ability
to achieve more precise estimates. With all these responsibilities, integrating probability and
statistics with engineering skills would enable electrical engineers achieve successful quality
control in projects, achieve high client satisfaction, and create good foundation for later quality
control.
Probability and Statistics in Research and Design
Research and design require substantial skills in probability and statistics. In designing
systems or circuits, characterizing a system must be first done and this requires some statistical
knowledge (Zhan, Fink, & Fang, 2011). This requirement necessitates the importance of
understanding probability and statistical techniques to portray a circuit or system, otherwise,
engineers would have difficulties moving on to the next task. In this regard, probability models
are commonly utilized in electrical engineering. Different inquiries can also be associated with a
statistical approach during an examination of different project inquiries. For instance, answering
questions like what is the average signal-to-noise proportion across board would require skills in
statistics. Other questions requiring skills in statistics could include whether there a significant

relationship between temperature and failure rate or which level of products will fall outside the
adequate range for battery life. These questions are important in planning a design to determine
the right methods to be used.
Typically, electrical engineers are frequently overseeing extensive systems and data
monitoring in conditions that are not always regulated. These circumstances present much in the
method of variability and randomness and highly depend on statistical skills to materialize
(Keim, 2020). These two aspects can help the engineering in building or designing dependable
systems by guiding them to determine unreliable parts.
Probability and Statistics in Development and Testing
Electrical engineers assigned to oversee quality control are responsible for testing new
items and deciding if those items fulfill the provided business guidelines in terms of
dependability, toughness, and functionality (Hahn & Doganaksoy, 2008). With this, project tests
and system tests coordinated by the supervising unit and the unit plan are often strictly executed
to ensure high-quality control. To guarantee quality objectives, the administration of
development projects utilize pre-control techniques such as process tracking and dynamic
quality. In this regard, statistical analysis is important to investigate the issues found during the
development and testing. This would enable easy detailing of the remedial measures and follow
ups for rectification where necessary (Wheles & Lehman, 1995).
Signal processing likewise utilizes skills in probability and statistics. The physical cycles
that produce electrical noise, for example, work in a manner that is random, and the outcome
variations in voltage and current are also random (Rautaray et al., 2021). Along these lines,

probability and statistical techniques are used to quantify, classify, and test the noise to deal with
and troubleshoot any background electrical signals.
Probability and Statistics in Estimation
Electrical engineers also utilize probability and statistical models to estimate the
resources needed for a project. This enables them to precisely gauge or estimate average values
of the needed systems or products without testing every single item. The development and
utilization of these models are key in figuring out what items are required to build and carry out
high-quality, reliable systems (Wheles & Lehman, 1995).
Probability and Statistics Literacy will Enhance Your Employability
Generally, probability and statistics skills are highly crucial in electrical engineering.
Mainly, pure statistics are heavily applied in theories as well as proofs. On the other hand,
applied statistics are mainly used in problem solving (Michigan Technological University,
2021 ). In this regard, statistics and probability skills can be used to improve the skills and
competencies of engineers and this can help in shaping their career in electrical engineering.
Understanding probability and statistics in electrical engineering can lead to having the in-depth
information and training required to not only be a competent electrical engineer but also teach
one to be innovative and creative. Probability and statistics also prepare engineers to be active
and dynamic learners in solving real-world problems. Robust knowledge of probability and
statistics would likewise incorporate correspondence and initiative electrical engineers to have
the option to utilize their statistical toolset in taking administration of their projects. Lastly, these

models can also teach you to get familiar with the important skills and abilities to collaborate
viably and effectively. (Michigan Tech, 2021).
Conclusion
This paper mainly explains the importance of probability and statistics in quality control
and career competencies in the field of electrical engineering. Statistical and probability models
are both utilized in designing, developing, and testing systems in electrical engineering projects
to analyze, evaluate, determine, and troubleshoot any projected problems. This further ensures
that quality control is in great standard and can be used as a foundation in lessening the burden
for future management of quality controls. In line with this reason, evaluating and examining
systems using probability and statistical models are essential skills . Thus, before graduating, it is
crucial to know the important skills needed to shape and build a strong electrical engineering
career path and achieve success.
