PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

PRESENTED BY GROUP 3 OF BS MDT – 1B

- Joel Osteen
Cultural awareness is knowing that
there are multiple different cultures-
based on religion, ethnicity,
nationality and other factors that
have different attitudes and
outlooks.
Cultural sensitivity refers to a set of skills that allows
you to learn about and understand people whose
cultural background is not the same as yours. You
see our differences as a positive thing, and don’t
consider one culture better or worse, right or wrong
A gesture that is acceptable in one
culture might be meaningless or
offensive in another.

Not every gesture is universal. For

example:
Heavy metal fans are familiar with
the so-called "sign of the horns“ but
in many european and south
american countries, this gesture
might be used to mock husbands
whose wives are unfaithful
Making a circle with your thumb
and your index finger is how we
signal "OK". But make the same
gesture in Brazil, and you're giving
the equivalent to the middle finger.
The thumbs-up gesture is a sign of
approval in most countries.
However, in several countries in
West Africa and the Middle East, it's
basically giving out the middle
finger.
In most cultures, crossing your
fingers means you're hoping for
good luck. But not in Vietnam
because this is the gesture that
resembles the female genitals and
might also be equivalent to the
middle finger.
Have a clear sense of your own
ethnic, cultural, and racial identity

Be aware of your stereotypes

Understand that you will likely be

perceived as a person with power
and racial privilege

Take any opportunity to put

yourself in places where you can
learn about differences
Gender sensitivity refers to the aim
of understanding and taking
account of the societal and cultural
factors involved in gender-based
exclusion and discrimination
Gender equality in language is attained when
women and men and those who do not conform
to the binary gender system are made visible and
addressed in language as persons of equal value,
dignity, integrity and respect. For example:
artificial man-made
chairperson chairman
solidarity brotherhood
legislator congressman
police officer policeman/policewoman
flight attendant steward/stewardess
postal worker mailman
The term political correctness is used to describe
language, policies, or measures that are intended
to avoid offense or disadvantage to members of
particular groups in society. Political correctness is
nothing more than treating others with respect.
aesthetically challenged ugly
comb-free bald
senior, elderly old
intellectually impaired stupid
informal settlers squatters
drug dependent drug addict
economically marginized poor
The concept of race has changed
across cultures and eras ranging
from being based on ancestral and
familial ties to theorists assigning
categories of race based on
geographic region, ethnicity, skin
color, and a wide range of other
factors.
Fear or apprehension of the unknown is a large
contributor to inadvertently creating
communication barriers. This is especially common
when faced with new or different spiritual beliefs
and practices.
 which topics are appropriate to talk
about
what is considered appropriate
clothing
breaks for rituals, such as prayer at
certain times of the day

Above all, approach the situation or

individual/s with empathy, curiosity, and
respect.
The ability to interact effectively with people of
different backgrounds, experiences and
perspectives is increasingly important in today’s
multicultural, multigenerational work environment.
Cultural sensitivity training raises awareness of the
nuances of cross-culture communication, and the
importance of words, actions, gestures and body
language in cultivating relationships with different
people and groups.
