 Module 2 Power of The Eight

The first fundamental concept that any student of Feng Shui should learn is the 8
Trigrams or the 8 Guas. The Trigrams or Guas, the Ba Gua, and the Luo Shu are the
starting points of all Feng Shui, and all your future modules will refer to the Trigrams
constantly.

As a student of Feng Shui, try to keep the Ba Gua and the Luo Shu handy when
studying the future modules of the Feng Shui Academy. If you can’t memorize it, just
print it out and keep it handy. Having it on hand will make all your future Feng Shui
lessons easier.

Explaining the Ba Gua

Long ago, during the era of the sage Fu Xi
(approximately 2800BC) in China, a strange
creature was spotted at the Yellow River. This
creature was a dragon-headed Horse with
carp-like scales, and its body contained strange
unique markings which were noted and studied
in depth. From the markings, the sages came out
with a model of dots called the He Tu.

From the He Tu, Fu Xi added the Trigrams to

derive a model of the universe: the Ba Gua. The
Ba Gua is a mathematical model or systematic formula used to ascertain the quality of the Qi
in a location. However, Fu Xi’s Ba Gua is now known as the Early Heaven Ba Gua, and it should
not be confused with the Later Heaven Ba Gua.

The Early Heaven Ba Gua Model envisions The Later Heaven Ba Gua Model takes into

The Luo Shu

In the era of Xia Yu, a giant dragon-headed turtle with black

and white spots on its shell was found beside the River Luo.
The Luo Shu was created based on the markings of the turtle’s
back, which you can see by comparing the chart with the turtle
in the picture.

LUO SHU 洛書

Using the information derived from the Luo Shu, the famous philosopher-King of the Zhou Dynasty, King
Wen modified the Early Heaven Ba Gua to take into account the imperfections and chaos in the universe,
thus producing the Later Heaven Ba Gua Model.

NOTE: Each line in the Luo Shu adds up to 15. This simple element can help you memorize the Luo
Shu.

The Trigrams
Looking at the Luo Shu, one of the main questions would be ‘what does the number on each sector
means?’ Each number on the Luo Shu is associated with a direction and a Trigram, which you can see from
the outer layer of the Luo Shu. Here’s a table showing the numbers and their associated Trigrams.

Take special note of number 5, the center. Although it doesn’t have any associated Trigram, it
is still a valid Gua, and there are people who has 5 as their personal Gua number.

Based on your personal Gua number, you would also know your home base, or your personal
house sector. If your home base is in good condition, you’ll be better off as well! Vice versa, if
your home base is not in good condition (overly messy, a pylon outside, or even a sharp roof
pointing towards it), you too won’t be in good condition.

When going through the Trigrams below, there is a part for good qualities, and a part of nega-
tive effects. Generally, if the sector is in good harmony, the good qualities will be present in
the occupants of the house. Similarly, if the sector is affected by negative forms or is missing,
the negative effects will be more apparent.

NOTE: Positive and negative internal and external forms are covered in other
modules.

In Feng Shui, a practitioner has to keep multiple factors in mind when carrying out a house
consultation. Each sector of your house has its own Qi influence, internal elements and
external factors. Note that Qi in this case means an arrangement of the Flying Stars, and it
could be positive or negative for the sector even if the external environment is not similarly
positive or negative. Here are several more examples of the results of combining all of these
factors together.

However, this is just a general overview of the Feng Shui in a property. As each individual’s
Personal Qi is different for each sector, the personal Feng Shui chart must be combined as

is now possible to see the Feng Shui results on every individual in the house. Remember that
everyone has a different Feng Shui chart, so not everyone benefits or is negatively affected
by the Feng Shui in the house the same way.
