Assignment 1 - PE II
Assignment 1 - PE II
Assignment No. 1
Max Marks: 100
Date: 20-01-2011
Question 1
Marks: 30
Refer to the website http://www.national.com/appinfo/power/files/f4.pdf which is an application note on
linear regulators. Read it carefully and answer the following questions based on your understanding:
(a) Explain the basic working principle and control loop operation of different types of regulators
namely the standard regulator, quasi low drop out regulator and low drop out regulator. Compare
them on the basis of drop out voltage, performance and application.
(b) Why the current limiting circuit is important, explain the working principle of the current limiting
circuit used in the linear regulators discussed in this application note.
(c) What is the selection criteria of the best linear regulator for a given application?
(d) Explain the working of the in-built thermal shutdown circuit.
Question 2 Marks: 10
Using the 7805C voltage regulator (a three terminal, +5V linear regulator), design a current source that
will deliver 0.3A current to a 5Ω, 2W load as shown in Fig. 1. Use the data from the datasheet of 7805C.

Question 3 Marks: 20
nd
Draw all the relevant waveforms for a 2 order buck-boost type DC-DC voltage converter operating in
Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) and obtain the expression for voltage gain for this converter.
Question 4 Marks: 20
Using a circuit simulator of your choice, simulate a 2nd order buck-boost type DC-DC voltage converter
with the following specifications:
Vs= 24V, D=0.4, RL = 5Ω, L=100µH, C=400µF, fs=20 kHz
and justify the formulas obtained in Question 3. Vary the duty cycle, load resistance and inductance
values over a wide range one by one and record their effect on the nature of operation (CCM, DCM or
Critical Conduction Mode). Discuss the observations made by above procedure with supporting
simulation waveforms.
Question 5 Marks: 20
Derive an expression for the voltage gain for the DC-DC voltage converter shown in Fig. 2 operating in
Continuous Conduction Mode. Determine the expression for critical inductance for this converter. Node
1-1’ is connected during ‘ON’ period and node 2-2’ during the ‘OFF’ period of the switching cycle.
