and its
functions
What is food?
Food is that which nourishes the
body.
It can be defined as anything that
meets the needs for energy, building,
regulation and protection of the
body.
Food is also defined as any substance
which when eaten or drunk gives us
energy after digestion. Food acts as
fuel for our body. The energy derived
from food helps in carrying out basic
metabolic activities of the body.
What is nutrition?
Nutrition is defined as food at work in the
body.
It is the scientific study of food and its
relation to health.
Functions
of Food
1.Physiological
functions of food

The physiological functions of


food can be further sub-divided
as follows:
a.Energy giving
b.Body building
c.Protective and Regulatory
This group includes food rich in
carbohydrate, fats and proteins.
Energy is defined in terms of kilo
calories and thus one gram of
carbohydrate gives 4 kcal, while one
gram of fat gives 9 kcal. This group
may be broadly divided into two
groups:
a. Energy • Cereals, pulses, nuts and oilseeds,
giving roots and tubers.
• Simple carbohydrates like sugars, fats
and oils.

important functions of food
is that of building the body.

Building • Milk, egg, meat and fish

Foods rich in protein, vitamins, and
minerals have regulatory functions in the
bogy eg. Maintaining the heart beat, water
balance, and body temperature. Protective
foods are broadly classifies into two
groups:

c. Protective • Foods rich in vitamins, minerals and

Milk, egg, fish and liver.
Regulatory • Foods rich in certain vitamins and
function minerals only eg. green leafy vegetables
and fruits.
2. Psychological
functions of food

They give a sense of comfort, security,


love and attention.
Sharing of food among friend is a token
of friendship and acceptance.
Friendly get together help in
introducing us to new foods.
Foods are associated with emotions like
sweets and chocolates for celebration.
Food is used for reward and
punishment.
3. social functions of food

• Food serves as a reason for get together.


• Birthdays, marriage and other celebrations become
reasons to serve food.
• Males are given more and better food due to their higher
status in the society.
• Refreshments serves at get together, bring more people
together rather than dividing them.
• Food planned must be wholesome and enjoyable.

1. Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the sugars and


starches found in fruits, grains,
vegetables and milk products.
Though often maligned in trendy
diets, carbohydrates are important
to a healthy diet.
2. Proteins

Protein makes up the building


blocks of organs, muscles,
skin, and hormones. Your
body needs a protein to
maintain and repair tissues.
3. Fats

Fats are a source of energy,


temperature regulation and
vitamin absorption. Fats can be
found in various foods, like dairy
products, meat, fish, whole
eggs, vegetables, nuts.
4. Fiber

Fiber can be found in fruits,


vegetables, pulses, and whole
grains. Fiber is needed to keep
our digestive system healthy,
prevent coronary heart diseases,
bowel cancer and diabetes.
5. Minerals

Minerals represent various


functions like building blocks
for our muscles, bones and
teeth, carrying oxygen in our
body, and keeping fluids
balanced.
6. Vitamins

Vitamins are found in all


fruits and vegetables. They
are an essential for
regulating and maintaining
the immune system.
7. Water

Water is necessary for


digestive processes. It
maintains the body pH at the
right level and helps in the
sustenance of body fluids.
