TOPIC 3 Multiplication - Division

The document provides instructions on operations involving functions, including multiplication, division, and composition of functions. It explains how to multiply two functions by using FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) and distributing terms. It also discusses how to divide functions by factoring or applying other techniques when the numerator is not divisible by the denominator. Finally, it defines the composition of functions as f(g(x)) and provides examples of evaluating composite functions.

MULTIPLICATION

To find the product of two functions, put parentheses
around them and multiply each term from the first
function to each term of the second function.

f(x) = x – 1 p(x) = 3x + 2
v(x) = x2 – 4 g(x) = x2 + 2x + 1

Determine the following:

(f ∙ p)(x) (v ∙ p)(x)
(f ∙ v)(x) (f ∙ g)(x)

DIVISION

Steps in dividing functions:

1. Substitute the given function to the

equation.

2. Divide the numerator by the denominator

or apply different types of factoring.

3. Simplify the value to get the final answer.

Composition of
Functions
Let f and g be functions. The composite function
denoted by is defined by .

1.
Find and simplify (g o f) (x).
Solution:
(g o f)(x) = g(f(x))
Find and simplify (q o f) (x). Given:
q(x)= x2 - 2x + 2
Solution: f(x)= 2x + 1
(q o f)(x) = q(f(x))
= x2 - 2x + 2
= f(x2)- 2[f(x)] + 2
= (2x + 1)2- 2(2x + 1) + 2
= (4x2 + 4x + 1) - (4x + 2) + 2
= 4x2 + 1 – 2 + 2
= 4 x2 + 1
Find and simplify (f o p) (x).
Solution:
(f o p)(x) = f(p(x))
= 2x + 1
= 2p(x) + 1

STEPS
Example: f(x) = x + 2 ; g(x) = 2x + 4 Find (f o g) (x)
Write the rst function based on the letter that you have saw rst in the equation.
Find (f o g) (x) = f (g(x))
=x+2

Followed by substituting the second expression.

Find (f o g) (x) = f (g(x))
=x+2
= g(x) + 2
= (2x + 4) + 2
Now simpli ed the expressions.
Find (f o g) (x) = f (g(x))
=x+2
= g(x) + 2
= (2x + 4) + 2
= 2x + 6
Final Answer:
(f o g) (x) = 2x + 6
Solve the following

Let f(x) =2x - 15

g(x)= x2 + 19x + 90
