THE GAME OF SEPAK TAKRAW

PE 3

The game of SEPAK TAKRAW is played with a ball (BOLA TAKLAW), which is made from cane
(rattan) on a court measuring 13.40 meters (44 ft) long and 6.10 meters (20 ft) wide. The game is played
by two sides each consisting of three (3) players. In playing SEPAK TAKRAW, all parts of the body except
the ARMS from below the shoulders to the hands can be used to PROPEL (push HIT or KICK/Smash the
ball over the NET which stand at 1.52 meters (5 feet) at the center court.

These body parts are legally used in SEPAK TAKRAW:

 Head (forehead)
 Chest
 Feet
 Thighs

Traditionally, SEPAK TAKRAW has been played in MALAYA PENINSULA (MALAYS) for centuries. It is
a widespread sport in the ROYAL COURT OF MALACCA in the 19 th century and became the most popular
sports events among Malaysians.

COUNTRY NAME OF THE GAME

1. Singapore - “Bola Sepak Raga” (Sepakraga)


2. Malaysia - “Sepak Raga Jaring” (Sepraja)
3. Brunei - “Sepak Raga Jala”
4. Indonesia - “Rago” (Sulawesi Selatan)
5. Burma - “Ching Loong”
6. Ceylon (Sri Lanka) - “Raga”
7. Laos - “Kator”
8. Philippines - “Sipa Lambatan” (Sipa/Sepak)
9. Thailand - “Takraw”
10. ASTAF (Asian Sepak Takraw Atheltic Federation) named it SEPAK TAKRAW or SEPA TAKRAW.

Presently, Sepak Takraw is being played by both boys and girls with 12 players each
TEAM comprising the four (4) REGU (group) with 3 players each REGU.

BASIC SKILLS INVOLVED

1. Service (Kicking the ball)


2. Receiving (ball controlling using body/chest/knees/thigh/legs/head/forehead)
3. Kicking/Pushing/Tapping
4. Spiking/Smashing (Hard hit/offense)
 Leg Smash
 Head Smash
 Scissor Spike
 Rolling Spike
5. Blocking (defense)
* Blocking is a defensive skill, mainly for the purpose of controlling/block any form of
spikes or smash coming from above and close to the net. A block is usually done by the player’s
BACK or by his FOOT that is raised high above the net.

*The game starts as soon as one of the inside players TROWN or SERVES the ball by HAND
to the TEKONG (Designated Kicker positioned at the center circle) The TEKONG shall kick the
served ball into his opponent’s court. The opponent on receiving the kicked serviced ball are
allowed to PLAY the ball not more than three (3) times/touched. On the third count must
be played (returned) into the other half (servers court). The same player (receiver) can play
the ball more than once, up to even three (3) times.

THE TAKRAW BALL

The Takwar ball shall be round made of one layer of RATTAN consisting of 9 to 11
strains having 12 holes. The ball circumference shall not be less than 0.41mm (16 inches)
and not more than 0.43mm (17 inches). The weight before the play, shall not be less than
160grm and not more than 180grm.

THE TEAM AND THE PLAYERS

1. A team (REGU) has three (3) players. Onl yone (1) substitute is allowed during the
whole game.

2. The player standing in the center of the court who executes the FIRST KICK during the
service is known as the TEKONG (Back). The player on his right is known as the INSIDE
RIGHT while the player who is on the opposite side (left) of the tekong isknown as the
INSIDE LEFT player.

SUBSTITUTION OF PLAYERS

1. Substitution of player is allowed on request by the coach (team manager) to the


official referee.

2. Each REGU is allowed to make one(1) substitution only during the match or set.

GAME OFFICIALS

The game of SEpak Takraw shallbe managed by trained and competent officials;

1. One (1) Official Referee

2. One (1) Official Umpire

3. One(1) Center line Linesmen

4. Six (6) linesmen

SOME GAMES PROTOCOLS/PROCEEDINGS

A. CHANGE OF SERVICE

1. Change of service is made when any fault iscommitted by the SERVING side
(offense)

2. Change of service is made when the receiving (defensive) side KILLS the return
(attack is made without counter return play)

B. SCORING OF POINTS

1. A poin is given to a REGU when its opponenthas made any FAULT or VIOLATION
according the rule of the game.

2. The winning points for every set/match is 15 points.

3. The scoring format follows the RALLY point system meaning a points is being
counted every end of the rally.
4. After each set, both the REGU shall change ends (change court). The change of
court will also occur in final set (RUBBER match)when one REGU reached 8 points.
However, if the change is not made at this juncture in the final set, the change of
court shpould be made immediately as soon as the lapses realized and the score
shall remain as is.

FAULTS/players game violation of the playing rules

1. The Serving Side during the Service

A. Stepping on the quarter circle line, center line, side line or the service circle
line.

B. The ball touches the NET and does not go over it. (Blocked NET)

C. The ball is kicked and goes under the net. (Aborted Service/short service
attempt)

D. The thrower played the ball as in tossing it up, bouncing/throwing, etc


after the umpire signals (announce the scores) the start of the service.

E. Kicked ball outside the court.

F. The ball touches a player (team mates) before crossing over the opponents
net/court.

G. The tekong failed to kick the ball on the service throw.

2. Receiving Side during Service

A. Players positioning; standing/playing ourside the playing court.

B. Walking about in a disturbing manneror making any noise or intentionally


harrasing hos opponents during the match.

3. For Both Sides during the games.

A. Stepping on the center line.

B. Balls falling inside and outside (ball dropping on the floor) the playing
court.

C. The ball illegally played or touches players hands or arms.

D. Holding the ball under the arm or between the legs.

E. Any part of the body or player’s OUTFIT (uniform) touches the net or posts
during the game.

F. Any player’s palying accessoriues/outfit (headband. Shoes, etc) fall into the
opponent’s court.

G. The is played/touched more than 3 (three) times in succession.

H. The ball RUNS over the body.

I. The ball touchges the ceiling/roof or any other foreign objects within the
playing venue.

GAME/TEAM PENALTY

The following offenses by both teams/players will be penalized.


1. Unsporting manner with regards to any infractions or decision made by the
officials of the game.

2. Utterance DEROGATORY remarks to any officials as well as the members of the


competing teams.

3. To take any IMPROPER actions to influence any decision made by the officials.

4. To leave the palying court without permission of the umpire except between
sets.

5. Any players/coaches DISOBEYING the game rule will be given a WARNING for
expulsion by the game umpire.
