MULTIPLYING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSIONS
In multiplying rational algebraic expressions, do the
following steps:
1. Write each numerator and denominator in factored form.
2. Divide factors that are common to both numerator and
denominator.
3. Multiply all the remaining factors in the numerator and/or
denominator.
Examples: 2. Find the product of

MULTIPLYING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

In multiplying rational algebraic expressions, do the following steps:
1. Write each numerator and denominator in factored form.
2. Divide factors that are common to both numerator and denominator.
3. Multiply all the remaining factors in the numerator and/or denominator.
Examples: 4. Find the product of

Expressions
DIVIDING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC
EXPRESSIONS
In dividing Rational Algebraic expressions, get the
reciprocal of the divisor and multiply the rational
expression.
Examples: 𝟐 𝟐 (𝟑)(𝟒)(𝒂𝟐) (𝟑)(𝒃)
1. Divide
𝟏𝟐𝒂
𝒃𝒚
𝟒𝒂 = •
(𝟑)(𝟑)(𝟐)(𝒃)(𝒃) 𝟐(𝟒)(𝒂 )
𝟏𝟖𝒃𝟐 𝟑𝒃
𝟏𝟐𝒂𝟐 𝟒𝒂𝟐 𝟏
= ÷ =
𝟏𝟖𝒃 𝟐 𝟑𝒃 𝟐𝒃
𝟏𝟐𝒂𝟐 𝟑𝒃
=
𝟏𝟖𝒃𝟐
• 𝟒𝒂𝟐
Examples:
3. Find the quotient
2. Divide 𝟖𝒙 + 𝟖𝒚 𝒙 𝟐 − 𝒚𝟐 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐𝟖 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝟗
𝟐
𝒃𝒚 ÷ 𝟐
𝒙 𝟖𝒙 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟒 𝒙 − 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟏𝟒

𝟖𝒙 + 𝟖𝒚 𝒙𝟐
− 𝒚𝟐 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐𝟖 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟓𝒙 − 𝟏𝟒
= •
÷ 𝒙𝟐 + 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟒 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝟗
𝒙𝟐 𝟖𝒙
𝟖𝒙 + 𝟖𝒚 𝟖𝒙 =(𝒙 + 𝟕 )(𝒙 – 𝟒 ) (𝒙 – 𝟕)(𝒙 + 𝟐 )
=
• 𝒙𝟐 − 𝒚𝟐 •
( 𝒙 + 𝟐 )(𝒙 + 𝟐 ) (𝒙 + 𝟕 )(𝒙 – 𝟕 )
𝒙𝟐
𝟖(𝒙+ 𝒚 ) 𝟖𝒙
=
(𝒙)(𝒙) • = (𝒙 − 𝟒)
( 𝒙 + 𝒚 )( 𝒙 – 𝒚) (𝒙 + 𝟐)
= 𝟔𝟒
𝒙(𝒙 − 𝒚)
DIVIDING RATIONAL ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
In dividing Rational Algebraic expressions, get the reciprocal of the divisor and multiply
the rational expression.
Adding and Subtracting Rational Algebraic
Expressions
In adding or subtracting rational algebraic
expressions with the same denominator, simply add or
subtract the numerator by combining similar terms and
copy the similar denominator. Simplify the resulting
expression if needed.
Examples:
= 𝒂 − 𝒃 + 𝟔𝒂 − 𝟑𝒃
𝑎−𝑏 6𝑎 −3𝑏 𝟖𝒃
1. Add 𝑎𝑛𝑑
8𝑏 8𝑏
= 𝒂 + 𝟔𝒂 − 𝒃 − 𝟑𝒃
𝑎 − 𝑏 6𝑎 − 3𝑏 𝟖𝒃
+
8𝑏 8𝑏 = 𝟕𝒂 − 4𝒃
𝟖𝒃
