WHAT I KNOW?

What do these insects follow to become a fully grown


organisms?

Metamorphosis
It is a biological process by which an animal
physically develops after birth or hatching. It is part of the
life cycle of the most insects.

Life cycle – is a period involving one generation of an


organism
Two Types of Metamorphosis
- Complete Metamorphosis
- Gradual/Incomplete Metamorphosis
4 stages in complete metamorphosis
1. Egg - a female insect lays egg.
2. Larvae – hatch from egg but do not look like adult insects.
The larvae of butterflies are caterpillars. Sometimes, these
stages of growth in larvae are called “instars.”

3. Pupa – larvae make cocoon around themselves, and


become busy changing into their adult forms. They do not
eat during this time. This can take few days, or in some
cases few months.

4. Adult – after a period of time, larvae is nothing like it was


and exits the cocoon or larval body as an adult.

What are the other insects that undergo complete


metamorphosis?

Stages of Gradual Metamorphosis


1. Egg – a female insect lays eggs.

2. Nymph – the eggs hatch into nymphs. It looks like small


adults but usually don’t have wings.
3. Adults – Once the nymph has grown to an adult size
they stop molting. Adults primary interest is mating

Aside from the grasshopper, what are the other examples of


insects that undergo gradual metamorphosis?

Animals that Lay Eggs


Some animals that lay eggs are birds, swan, duck,
penguin, owl, ostrich, fish, snake, turtle, lizard, frog, chicken,
butterfly and wasp.

What are the parts of the eggs?

Eggs have three basic parts:


1. Shell- it isolates the internal parts from the environment
and somehow protects the eggs from external forces
2. Albumin- helps to maintain the egg yolk in its position and
prevent it to scramble
3. Yolk – serves as the food of the developing bird.

What are the different stages on the life cycle of a chicken?


How about the turtle?
How many stages the life cycle of a frog have? What are its’
different stages?
Human Life Cycle

1. Infancy – it is categorized as lasting from birth through the


first year of life. The infant is completely dependent upon its
parents or caretakers for survival.
2. Childhood – takes place between ages 1 to 10. the first 2
years, the child is called a toddler. During this time, the
child learns how to walk, talk and be more self-sufficient. The
child is susceptible during this time to learn habits and
behaviors.
3. Adolescence – takes place between ages 12 and 18 and
is a critical turning point because it is when puberty takes
place. Boys’ voices change and girls get their periods. As
such, they begin to separate more from the parents and
become more independent.
4. Adulthood – It is when human beings are fully grown and
must provide entirely for themselves. This is also significant
time that adults can give birth.
5. Old Age - the final stage of the normal life span.

Directions: Analyze the pictures on the next slide. Write the
