1. Name of Speakers
Our group’s opinion about drug awareness is that since drug abuse is a widespread
problem that makes individual drug users the prime victims and drug abuse can cause
serious physical and mental deterioration thus, effective drug education is important and
should be exercised because young people are faced with many influences to use both
licit and illicit drugs. Education can play a counterbalancing role in shaping a normative
culture of safety, moderation, and informed decision making and we have thought that
the prevention of drug abuse has to be a component part of social programmes, school
curricula, anti-crime activities, the provision of recreational facilities, parenting support
programs, and the like. Drugs have positive uses too, but as it is human nature we tend
to bend towards the negative side of the use of drugs.
In fact, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) reports that
approximately 5 percent of the world's population used an illicit drug in 2010 and 27
million people, or 0.6 percent of the worlds adult population, can be classified as
problem drug users. In addition to causing death, substance abuse is also responsible
for significant morbidity and the treatment of drug addiction creates a tremendous
burden on society. Alcohol and other drug use in the adolescent population carries a
high risk for school underachievement, delinquency, teenage pregnancy, and
depression.
