Media and Information Literacy
Quarter 1- Module 1: Introduction to Media and Information Literacy
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
Objectives: This will give you an idea of the skills or competencies you
are expected to learn in the module.
Motivation: This part includes an activity that aims to check what you
already know about the lesson to take. It also includes a
brief drill or review to help you link the current lesson with
the previous one.

In today’s lesson it embodies your essential knowledge that will allow you to
engage with media and information channels in a meaningful manner.
PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION
There are at least five elements that characterize the communication
process:
• The indicators (the sender and the recipient of the message)
• The message or the information
• The medium
• The feedback or reactions, and
• The communication environment
o The indicators are both senders and recipients of the message, which
may include a person-to-person or group-to-group level of communication
o The message is the information or the verbal and nonverbal message
being conveyed to another person or group of people.
o The medium is the channel through which the message is coursed.
o The feedback or reaction is the response to a message or behavior.
o The communication environment is the context in which the
communication takes place

can use for communication. Through the media, communication takes place in a faster and more
effective way. Information is the knowledge or the content of communication. Without
information, there is no communication taking place .]

• Media: The physical objects used to communicate with, or the mass communication
through physical objects such as radio, television, computers, film, etc. It also refers to
any physical object used to communicate messages.

• Media Literacy: The ability to access, analyzes, evaluate, and create media in a
variety of forms. It aims to empower citizens by providing them with the competencies
(knowledge and skills) necessary to engage with traditional media and new
technologies.
“These skills include being able to access media on a basic level , to analyze it in
a critical way based on certain key concepts, to evaluate it based on that analysis and,
finally , to produce media by oneself. This process of learning media literacy skills is
media education”(Media Literacy Fundamentals)
(it means that you are knowledgeable on how to use media. And to be a media
literate person kailangan alam mo kung paano mag access at kung saan hahanapin
yung form ng media na kailangan mo. Kailangan marunong ka ding mag analyzed kung
valid ba yung text na gagamitin and kung reliable ba yung sources na pinanggalingan
nun. Alam mo kung paano mag explore gamit ang media text and lastly alam mo kung
paano gamitin ang media and gumawa ng sarili mong media text.)
• Information: A broad term that covers processed data, knowledge derived from study,
experience, instruction, signals or symbols.
• Information Literacy: The ability to recognize when information is needed and use it
efficiently, hence you must be able to locate, evaluate, and effectively communicate
information in its various formats.
(As an information literate alam mo kung kailan, saan at kung paano gagamitin
yung information na hinahanap mo or nahanap mo. And syempre alam mo din kung
paano mag evaluate ng information, and once na marunong ka malalaman mo kung
yun bang information na nakuha mo is factual or not.)
(There are three marks to become a literate person, first, you must have a long
social vision, second, you must be motivated life-long learner and lastly, you must
know how to find and use information in various contexts.)
Importance of Information Literacy
To be able to distinguish which among the sources of information are relevant

Importance of Technology Literacy
With the new technological discoveries and breakthroughs, people nowadays are
even hoping to find cure for dreaded incurable illness.
It will save valuable time and help one do things smoothly.
• Media and Information Literacy: The essential skills and competencies that allow
individuals to engage with media and other information providers effectively, as well as
develop critical thinking and life-long learning skills to socialize and become active
citizens.
All of the “news” in the Real/Fake Activity are fake news. Below are tips on how
to counter fake news.
