Supplemental notes:
Additional notes:
The 4Cs model of effective communication is presented as a useful tool for objectively
evaluating the effectiveness of many forms of communication. These are:
1) comprehension–the understanding of the message by making it clear and sharp, repeating,
and keeping it simple.
2) connection–getting the message and its meaning and significance to the receiver using
rational or emotional appeal, to spark a response and behavior,
3)credibility– when the receiver or audience believes who is saying it, what is being said, and
how it is being said to establish and maintain the connection; and
4)contagiousness–when the audience catches the so-called “message fever” and spreads it
and appreciates the sharing just like establishing recall when a slogan or a phrase is used in
conversations thru a demonstrable reaction like the famous slogan used by the tourism industry
“There is More Fun in the Philippines!”

The ultimate goal of communication is to achieve competence (Lane, downloaded 2014),

which is defined as the degree of effectiveness and appropriateness in the interaction.
Communication must generate meanings within and across various contexts. The transmission
of messages thru speech, signals or writings must be satisfactorily received and understood.
According to Lane there are three goals in communication as follows:

1) Self-presentation goals – the projection of a communicator how he or she wants to be

perceived,
2) Relational goals – how relationship is developed, maintained, and terminated during
communication; and
3) Instrumental goals – how compliance and understanding is gained in communication
including managing and solving of conflicts and achieve reciprocity.

Spitzberg and Cupach (1984) developed the framework for understanding communication
competence. This has three specific dimensions:
1) motivation (the communicator’s approach in various situations),
2) knowledge (action and procedural knowledge learned or acquired by the
communicator); and
3) skill (communication behaviors that are explicitly performed).

PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION

14
In making this assessment on competence, the framework uses six (6) criteria to
determine communication competence. These are:
1) adaptability – the flexibility of sender and receiver in communication in adjusting on a given
situation,
2) conversational involvement – interaction during communication using verbal and non-
verbal gestures,
3) conversation management – the control and regulation of communication especially in
changing moods or topics,
4) empathy - putting someone on another man’s shoe and achieve understanding,
5) effectiveness – ability to achieve the objectives of communication; and
6) appropriateness – making some expectations in any communication situation like when the
sender and receiver agrees.
