Trace how Chinese Mestizos became an important element of


Philippine society in 19th century both in political and social arena. At
least 5 sentences. (10 pts)

The Chinese Mestizos were an important element of Philippine society in the 19th
century, they played a significant role in the formation of the Filipino middle class, in
the agitation for reforms in the 1898 revolution, and in the formation of what is now
known as the Filipino nationality. Filipinos with Chinese blood in their veins have
occupied important positions in the highest levels of the highest levels of the
government during the first half of the 20th century, one of the dominant national
political figures, later the vice president of the Philippine commonwealth was Sergio
Osmeña who was a Chinese mestizo. In religion, Mother Ignacia de Espiritu Santo
the founder of the first Filipino congregation for Filipino women, in education we
have Vidal A. Tan former UP President, in business and philanthropy we have
Teodoro Yangco and in arts we Tomas Pinpin – the first Filipino painter. Chinese
mestizos, the descendants of Chinese of Europe, are the leaders in the island in wealth
and intelligence - they are the men who were chiefly instrumental in overthrowing the
power of Spain and they are the men who, with the loudest voices, arrogate to
themselves the right of speaking for the people of the archipelago. The recorded
history of the Philippines would be incomplete as a basis for understanding
contemporary society unless it considers the Chinese mestizo’s contribution to our
development as a nation.
2. What were the implications of their ascendance for the ruling
Spaniards? At least 3 sentences. (10 pts)

Chinese mestizos, the descendants of Chinese, in many cases educated in Spain and other
parts of Europe are the leaders in the island of the wealth and intelligence, the Spaniards
felt little or no affinity at all with the Indio’s and saw themselves threatened by the
existence of the Chinese mestizos, in addiction to this Chinese mestizos are chiefly
instrumental in overthrowing the power of Spain, they are the men who, with the loudest
voices arrogate to themselves the right of speaking for the people of the archipelago.
Lastly Chinese mestizos demand for the abolition of the tribute of tax payment based on
ethnic considerations and its replacement by a tax applied uniformly to all to erase legal
distinction between Indio’s and Chinese mestizos.
3. Provide two ways the Ilustrados manifested their nationalistic ideals
wherein Chinese Mestizos and Indio’s are identified as one. 2 sentence
per item. (10 pts)

1. The demand for the abolition of the tribute of tax payment based on ethnic
consideration and its replacement by a tax applied uniformly to all to erase legal
distinction between Indio’s and Chinese mestizos. Indio’s and Chinese mestizos
participated the three martyrs’ brilliant defense of the clergy aroused certain degree of
national and racial consciousness and secularization defined the issue between the ruler
and the ruled.
2. Becoming increasingly difficult to separate the two groups as the Chinese mestizos
were inclined to identify themselves with the Indio’s culturally and socially. They
gravitate towards each other politically due to common grieves - independent minded,
vociferous and liberal to the point of being radical
