Buenavista, Guimaras: Guimaras State College College of Engineering and Industrial Technology

The document is a worksheet on vibration engineering that was issued to mechanical engineering students. It contains definitions of key terms used in vibration analysis like vibration, amplitude, cycle, frequency, period, resonance, damped vibration, and forced vibration. Students are asked to provide their own definitions and examples for some terms, differentiate damped and forced vibrations, and reflect on what they've learned. The document serves to introduce students to fundamental concepts and terminology in vibration engineering.

Module 1

(Introduction

and Definition of Terminologies)

Overview
This first module covers mainly the meaning of the terminologies used in the discussion of
the course. It serves as the foundation of every student taking up the mechanical
engineering program. Basically, terms are defined to help students to easily understand its
complexity in dealing with the subject matter.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the worksheet/ module, the students must be able to;

1. State several definitions of Terms involved in the entire module

2. Appreciate the significance of the study of vibration in the analysis and design of devices
and structures.
3. Differentiate free vibration from forced vibration and damped vibration.
4. Explain the applicability of each term in vibration analysis.

Lecture Notes:
What is Engineering?
Engineering is a profession of immense creativity and unsung contribution. Those who work in
the profession have given us innumerable gifts — gifts that we all too often take for granted and
on which we totally rely. As we look around almost all things we see and use are the results and
contributions of engineers. Sadly, we rarely know the names of those who gave us these gifts.
Engineers use scientific knowledge to safely and economically solve practical problems to meet
human needs. Engineers apply technical and scientific knowledge and utilize natural laws and
physical resources in order to design and build structures, machines, devices, systems, and
processes that safely meet desired objectives or criteria— for the benefit of people. The broad
discipline of engineering encompasses a range of specialized subdisciplines, each with a specific
emphasis on certain fields of application and particular areas of technology. The marvel of
engineering is one that is hard to capture in words. We decided to draw on three views that
hopefully help complete the picture.

What is Vibration?
The subject of engineering vibration is a subset of the discipline of mechanics, the science of
motion, forces, and time. Mechanics is comprised of statics — in which time is not a factor —
and dynamics — in which time is a factor. Dynamics includes the special areas of kinematics and
kinetics. Kinematics is the branch of classical mechanics that describes the motion of objects
without consideration of the causes leading to their motion. It is called “the geometry of
motion.” The other branch is kinetics, which studies the relationship between the motion of
objects and its causes. The field of vibration encompasses both kinematic and kinetic problems
of engineering mechanics.

What is Amplitude?
The maximum distance moved by a point on a wave measured from a peak or valley to the
equilibrium position.

https://www.britanica.com

What is Cycle?
A complete set of events that repeat themselves regularly in the same order, or a regularly
repeated period of time.

https://www.thefreedictionary.com

What is Frequency?
Refers to the number of occurrences of a periodic event per time and is measured in
cycles/second. Note: The unit used for Frequency is Hertz (Cycle/sec.)

What is Period?
A time period (denoted by 'T'') is the time taken for one complete cycle of vibration to
pass a given point. As the frequency of a wave increases, the time period of the wave
decreases.

Note: Period (T) is reciprocal of frequency (f). f=1/T

What is Resonance?
When one object vibrating at the same natural frequency of a second object forces that second
object into vibrational motion. The word resonance comes from Latin and means to "resound" -
to sound out together with a loud sound.

Ex. Guitar; A guitar produces sound entirely by vibration of its string.

What is Damped Vibration?

When the energy of a vibrating system is gradually dissipated by friction and other resistances,
the vibrations are said to be damped. The vibrations gradually reduce or change in frequency or
intensity or cease and the system rests in its equilibrium position.

What is Forced vibration?

It is said to be forced vibration when an alternating force or motion is applied to a mechanical
system, for example when a washing machine shakes due to an imbalance.
