Tutorial-Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel can be used to accurately plot sine signals. To plot a single sine function like f(t) = 2sin(2π10t), the user must: 1) Decide on the number of data points per period and the period length. 2) Generate the time values in one column and the sine function values in another using Excel formulas. 3) Select both columns and insert a scatter plot with smooth lines to view the graphed sine signal.

Guidelines on Excel

i. Microsoft Excel is a very famous spreadsheet tools for data manipulation and
analysis.
ii. We can use Excel to plot a sine signal accurately.
iii. Before we start, we need to decide:
1) How many data point we will use to represent ONE period of the signal (e.g. 100
points)
2) How long is ONE period (e.g. 0.1 s)
iv. e.g. plot a sine function 𝑓(𝑡) = 2 sin(2𝜋10𝑡)
1) Put 0 and 1 on A1 and A2 cells
2) Select both A1 and A2 cells
3) Go to the bottom right corner on A2, you will see a black “+”

4) Hold the left button of your mouse, and slide down, then you can see 1, 2, 3, 4,
5….. show on column A.

5) Then go down to row 201

6) From 𝑓(𝑡) = 2 sin(2𝜋10𝑡) , we know 𝑓 = 10 𝐻𝑧 , therefore 𝑇 = 𝑓 = 0.1𝑠 .

We use 100 points in ONE period, thus the interval between two points is T/100.
In cell B1, type=A1*0.1/100

7) Press Enter

8) Put the cursor at the right bottom of B1, hold the left button of your mouse, and
slide down to row 201. You can see the formula will duplicate for the whole
column B.

9) In cell C1, type=2*sin(2*pi()*10*B1)

10) Press Enter. Put the cursor at the right bottom of C1, hold the left button of your
mouse, and slide down to row 201. You can see the formula will duplicate for
the whole column C.

11) Select both columns B and C.

12) Go to ‘Insert’ tab

13) Click the ‘down arrow’ of the Scatter charts

14) Select the ‘Scatter with Smooth Lines’ graph

15) The graph will be shown
