Lesson Content (What’s New)

Contemplate and answer the question “Is the world shrinking or expanding?”
Is it shrinking? The concept of shrinking world pertains on how seems the world is smaller because of all the
global integration. A good example would be, two hundred years ago, everyone had to walk to their destination
they wish to go; no one could travel very far, which made the world seem so big. In today’s world, one can
simply fly with an airplane and in number of hours, you have arrived in your destination. It’s almost everyone
and everywhere all around the world is within our reach.
Or is it expanding? The forces of technology and globalization have opened the world up to such extent that
the world is larger than it’s ever been. The horizon of what we can see, hear, learn, taste, etc. has increased.
Meeting new people and learning new culture has surpassed the so called “traditional borders”.
So? What do you think? Is the world shrinking or expanding?
According to Thomas Friedman, a New York Times foreign affairs columnist, In his book, The World Is Flat: A
Brief History of the Twenty-First Century, first published in 2005, Friedman argues that in the process of
globalization, which he calls the “flattening” of the world, a surprising and lightning-quick convergence of
technologies allows individuals (not just countries and companies) to communicate “from anywhere to
anywhere,” collaborating and competing for the first time on a level-playing field (Downing,2000)
