RM 1 - Database Management System

The document discusses database management systems and planning databases. It defines data and explains that a database management system allows users to store, modify, and extract information as needed. Some key advantages of a DBMS are that it helps control redundancy, enforces data integrity, avoids inconsistency, shares data between users, and restricts unauthorized access. Planning a good database requires determining the purpose, necessary tables, fields, and relationships between data.

Database Management System

I. Introduction
Microsoft Access is a type of database software that is used to store information
for reporting, referencing and analysis. With Microsoft Access, you can analyze
large amounts of data faster and more efficiently than with Excel or other types of
spreadsheets.

II. Objective
1. Discuss what is Data
2. Define Database Management System
3. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of DBMS
4. How to apply planning a data bases

III. Discuss/Course Content

 What is data?
Data is a raw material that needs to be processed before it can turn into something useful.
What is computerized database and the two Types Computerized database is compact, flexible,
and fast. It can store thousands of data without occupying too much space.
1. Simple data base contains one specific category of data.
2. Relational database are collections of different sets of data related to each other.
Database Management system if databases are a collection of data stored in a computer for
easy retrieval, a DBMS is basically a collection on computer programs that enables users to
store modify and extract information based on per requirement.
 Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of DBMS
1. Control redundancy
2. Enforces integrity
3. Avoid inconsistency
4. Share Data
5. Enforces standards
6. Restricts unauthorized
7. Solve enterprise requirement than individual’s requirement
8. Provides backup and recovery

9. Lowers development and maintenance cost
10. Develops data model
11. Controls concurrency
 Disadvantaged
1. Complexity
2. Size
3. Performance
4. Higher impact of failure
5. Cost
6. Additional hardware cost
7. Cost of conversion
 How to apply planning a data bases
1. Determine the purpose of your database
2. Determine the tables you need
3. Determine the fields you need
4. Determine the relationships
5. Refine your design.
