Claims of Fact

Claims of Fact assert that a condition has existed, exists, or will exist and are based on facts or data. It
relates to statements that can be easily verified and not dependent on a person's preference.
Questions of fact includes: What is true or false? What happened/didn't happen? How do we know
this? and What exists/doesn't exist?

Types of factual claims (generally "objective")


1. Factual / historical
2. Relational - causal connections
3. Predictive

Proof requires:
• sufficient and appropriate grounds
• reliable authority
• recent data
• accurate, typical data
• clearly defined terms - no loaded language
• a clear distinction between fact and inference
Examples

1. Obesity causes health problems.


2. Neil Armstrong was the first man to step foot on the moon.
3. The first Mindanaoan President is Rodrigo Duterte.

The example claims above are factual and can be defended based on data that are accessible.

Activity. Directions: Encircle the number of the statement that expresses a claim of fact.

1. COVID-19 pandemic is the most pressing challenge the world is facing today.
2. Converting to solar energy can save homeowners money.
3. You should support restrictions on abortion.
4. Bringing of electronic gadgets like laptops and iPods should be banned in schools.
5. People living in polluted areas should start thinking how to recycle their wastes so that they can make
other alternatives and livelihood as well.
6. Fetal tissue research is wrong.
7. People use Facebook and other internet platforms to bully someone.
8. The Anti-Terrorism Bill should protect Filipinos.
9. It is cruel to hurt someone because they don’t look like you.
10. Excessive drinking of alcohol can cause diseases.
