THE PROBLEM
Introduction
A good habit practiced today will reflect a better tomorrow. Studying passionately can bring us to
a better life as well as it also brings us a better grade. Relationship between study habits and general
average of the learners, most specifically, HUMSS 1 Rizal student will prepare for ideas which each
students exactly needed. In this study, general average of a student with a competent study habits will be
tackled explicitly to give better practices that will be beneficial to more individual. Furthermore, general
average of a student with a bad study habits will be also tackled why it is harder to improve in academic
performance. Thus, this study focuses on providing the effective results to people, especially, students
who are lacking on giving attention to their studies but wants to improve their academic performance and
general average.
Focusing on studies and enhancing appropriate manners towards gaining knowledge are indeed
a way to improve the skills and performance of an individual. It says that “Ability improves and sharpens
through master of principles ang by means of training exercises, and constancy of application” (Ortinero,
2000, p.56) which support the step on achieving a goal in terms of academic performance comes from
how a students acts depending on what goal he wanted to reach. According to Nagaraju 2004 “Study
habits means habit that an individual might have formed with respect to his learning activities.” An
individual can learn acquire a good study habits, specifically, students who are most likely to achieve high
grade remarks are disciplined enough to handle their studies well through maintaining their obtained
habit. Learning and stock knowledge comes from a sincere act of studying in different ways that would

There are a lot of factors that may affect a student’s academic performance. One of those many
factors may be one’s study habits. According to Nonis and Hudson (2010), where study time and study
habits are investigated to be factors in the academic performance of college students shows that there is
no significant relationship between the study time and academic performance. On the other hand, results
show that study habits has a significant relationship with a college students’ performance. Therefore, the
study provides a support to the relationship of study habits and students’ performance particularly in
Another study conducted by Kaur and Pathania (2015) says that significant relations were found
between academic achievements of adolescents to their study habits. High achieving adolescents were to
comprehend better, more task-oriented and perform better in recording. There are also factors affecting
Furthermore, Chilca (2017) studied on the study habits and academic performance among
universities’ students in Peru concluded that study habits do influence academic performance. There is a
high relationship between academic performance and study habits as indicated with correlation index of
0.695 according to Anwar (2013). This means that the relationship between the mentioned variables is
high and strong where in having a better study habits leads to a better academic performance in school.
In addition, there is an effect of the practiced study habits in terms of having either good or bad
performance achievements of individual. It is also shows that bad habits have a significant negative
According to Abillon, Jr. Et al. (2017), it is believed that a grade is a primary indicator of such
learning. If a learner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also have learned a lot while low
grades indicate lesser learning. This means earning a high grades depends on you and it is related to the
relationship between study habits and general average of a student depending on what an individual is
practicing.
It is important to have a study habits because you will receive an excellent Academic
Performance that will help you to have a good general average for overall. Base on Alva (2017), study
habits play a major role in the improvement of a student’s academic performance . In fact developing
study habit will improve our academic performance and also it will be great to us to have a high general
average that will lead to us in our next challenges and The study of the correlation between self-esteem
and study of study habits with the students' academic performance showed that self-esteem does not
significantly impact academic performance. Still, study habits do. Improving your study habit make your
self-confidence better and also it will guide you to perform well because you are not depending to the
others. It is true that a lot of student achieve a high performance even If they not study a lot still getting a
excellent because they have study habits. Acido (n.d.), said that Research done on the topic of learning in
general points to the important role major contextual influences play in either the enhancement or
retardation learning. A lot of student struggle in terms of learning because they are lack of study habits
that is why study habit is very important in students to have a better grades.
According to Alico et al. (2019) To accomplish these things student need a habit - a study habit
that will help us to take this responsibility, help built skill that reinforce hardwork. Preparation and practice
be the successful one. In other words a lot of students achieve a high marks on their class because they
manage their study habits and also they use study habits to get a high grades.
Based on Maxwell Many of the students complained of lack of time and conducive environment
for study, others who try to study complained of lack of understanding. It means that some of students are
struggling on their study because they are lack of study habits that gives them a poor grades.
Related Studies
Study habits define a student’s personality and functionality academically. Students’ character
towards his academic performance is defined by his study habits. It has a very important role in a
student’s life. Success or failure of students depends on his study habits which means, when he practices
a good study habits then he can achieve more and vice versa. Their success definitely depends on their
An empirical research findings of Bashir and Mattoo (20120, the study claims that habits affects
academic performance. When students practice poor and inappropriate study habits, their academic
performance is expected to be poor as well. Thus, this study determines that there’s significant
relationship between the variables. Also, in the “Study habits of Senior Secondary School Students and
Academic Performance in Rivers State” Eremie (2017), showed that effective study habits includes
demonstrating high motivation, avoiding distraction, right learning style with concentration, interest, ability
to remember facts studied and time management. Basically, study habits demonstrate the extent to which
the learner engages in routine acts of studying effectively in achieving high performances in examination
scores. Which explicitly point out the appropriate characters of practicing the effective study habits that
can be done to improve the students’ performance in terms of academic achievement, particularly, in their
general average.

(Tus, et.al. 2020). Study habits have a huge role in all students and also study habits help the student to
achieve their goal to get an excellent average. According to Relucio (2019), students who have poor
study habits receive low grades in school, thus, a good study habit is a prerequisite for good academic
performance and the students’ performance can be measured in the test results or in the general average
every quarter or semester. Therefore, the study habits and general average of the students are very
important because it will help them to maintain their achievement in their own way and also maintaining
Magulod jr. (2018) stated that one of the important steps to undertake to ensure quality and
optimal learning experience among university students is to consider their different learning styles and
preferences. Learning styles refers to how students learn and process information in their own ways. In
other words, learning style and study habits have the same goal which is to achieve a high grades.
According to Abastillas et.al (2018), students should observe and form a good and proper study
habits in order for them to achieve academic performance. However, it has been observe by teachers and
other school personnel that students nowadays do not even bother to study the books they have
received. This makes them less attentive and interested in learning and negatively impacts on their
performance.
Theory
Social Cognitive Theory by Albert Bandura in the 1960s is emphasizing one’s cognition. Cognition
is defined by Cambridge as “the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding
through thought, experience, and the senses”. Social Cognitive Theory suggests that activities like
construction of one’s reality selectively, encoding information, performing behaviors based on values and
expectations is greatly affected by one’s mind, it is considered as an active force in performing the above
mentioned activities. Understanding, predicting and changing human’s behavior is through understanding
the process involved in one’s construction of reality. In this theory, student’s academic performance and
achievement is achieved through the combination of the student’s personality and study behavior or study
Study time and study habits are investigated to be factors in the academic performance of college
students. Study provides a support to the relationship of study habits and students' performance. Having
a better study habits leads to a better academic performance in school. Bad habits have a significant
