Do the following:
1. With a partner, find a popular song (either in English or Filipino) with lines or stanzas that
illustrate nationalism.

“Mga kababayan ko, dapat lang malaman nyo, bilib ako sa kulay ko. Ako ay Pilipino”

-(Mga Kababayan ko) Francis M. 1990

2. Research on the history of the song (song writer) and relate the theme (of nationalism) to
the songwriter based on his / her background.

The song entitled “Mga Kababayan Ko” is written by Francis Magalona which
was first released in 1899. This song is said to promote Philippine culture and aspirations. Over the
years, mga kababayan ko has been a hit on all music platforms and most requested music on radio
stations natiowide.

Francis Magalona or also known as “Francis M.” is a Filipino rapper, singer, song-writer, entrepreneur
and a television personality in the Philippines who is believed to give birth to modern OPM (Original
Pilipino Music) (wikipedia, 2009). Magalona is eight among nine children of Pancho and Duran
Magalona. He was born in Manila, Philippines on 4th of October 1964. All through out his career,
Magalona has been the Master of Modern Filipino Rap which is also known internationally. He was
the first Philippine-based Filipino to record a rap album, Yo! in 1989 that produced his signature hit,
Mga Kababayan Ko! This hit has marked the birth of Makabayang or Nationalistic rap in Filipino hip
hop in 1990(artsandculture,2011). His contributions to the rap genre have been featured in several
international hip hop publications including the All Music Guide to Hip-Hop: The Definitive Guide to
Rap and Hip-Hop (2003) published by Backbeat Books; as well as the May 2004 issue of the U.S. based
publication The Source (IMDb,2011). Mga Kababayan Ko! is a song written to remind his fellow
Filipino’s the beauty of being Pinoy. Magalona is a musician who is bigger than his music, just like
the message of his song, this artist went beyond his medium. He worked so hard and create a name
not to be famous, but to give an aspiration for his fellow Filipino’s. Working hard is not a challenge,
but a process to achieve the goals we aim. He was a nationalist and his voice was exactly what the
Philippines needed.
3. Illustrate the song’s message on nationalism in a one-page collage.

“Mga kababayan ko, dapat lang malaman nyo, bilib ako sa kulay ko. Ako ay Pilipino”

“Kung may itim o may puti, mayron naman kayumangi. Isipin mo na kaya mong abutin ang
iyong minimithi”
