Backblaze is a US-based company that was originally launched in 2007. It was started by a
team of five including CEO Gleb Budman and CTO Brian Wilson. The best cloud backup site
had their humble beginnings in a small apartment. They quit their day jobs and worked on to
backup family and friends’ computer data. By 2008, they officially launched a beta version of
Backblaze.
In 2010, Backblaze shipped nearly every day USB hard drives for restoration. 5 years later, they
introduced their B2 cloud storage for storage solutions of site developers. By 2018, Backblaze’s
blog posts reached 10 million readings. In 2020, Backblaze pronounced to have stored 1
exabyte of user data. Backblaze currently operates with 4 data centers located across the US

1. What is the scope of Backblaze’s backup?
Backblaze securely stores all your data: all user profiles and computer data with the exception
of applications, program files, and operating systems. The connected drives (internal drives,
firewire hard drives, and USB) within the computer are backed up as well.

2. What does Backblaze mean with a “version”?


Any alterations on the file means a new file version is made. Alterations include editing,
changing, updating, or deleting without changing the file name. These alterations are commonly
referred to as “modifications” within Backblaze.

3. What does “Version History” mean?


Version history pertains records of the modified or pre-deleted phases or versions of files.
Without Backblaze, these records are gone forever. However, basic version of Backblaze only
keeps version histories of up to 30 days. Post 30 days, those version histories will be deleted
and the current, saved version of files will be available.

4. Does Backblaze remember prior account information?


Yes. Once Backblaze is uninstalled but reinstalled once again, it remembers prior account
information. However, if you opt to reinstall it with a different email address, you can start
entirely new. Hold the “alt” key and click on “Install Now” to register with a different email
address as your new account.

5. How can I maximize Backblaze?


Even the best cloud backup system needs time to work its way through your computer. This
usually takes up to 30 days to complete. Also, check in your Backblaze account to view
notifications. Ensure your account and data security by providing an unused password. Most
importantly, immediately select restoration options for all your data.

6. How can you remove a backup from an account?


First, sign in to your Backblaze account. Next, hit on preferences on the left side of your
dashboard. Click “delete backup” beside the computer name you wish to discontinue services
with. Refresh the site to see if the necessary changes were made.

7. How are business groups created in Backblaze?


Verify first your email address and click on “enable business groups” in your account. Check on
the left side of your dashboard for the group management settings. Head on to “create group”
and enter group details, products, and administrative privileges. Next, select payment options.
Lastly, invite your business group members via sending email invitation links.

8. How can you add billing to a new group?


Go to “group management” settings and click on “buy” beside the group name you are going to
add the bill for. A form will automatically be viewed with options for licenses and group payment
plans. Enter credit card or ACH information here. Once everything is set, proceed to click “buy”
on the bottom part.

9. How can you re-upload a new backup?


To maximize uploading of backups to Backblaze, check the performance settings of your PC or
Mac desktop. Tweak to increase both “Automatic Throttle” and “Number of Backup Threads”.
Tweaking one or both will have a huge increase in your uploading capacity.

10. Backblaze B2 cloud storage vs. online Backblaze backup: what’s


the difference?
Backblaze B2 is cloud storage which means you can access your data from any operating
system of any computer in the world. Data backed up in Backblaze B2 is not encrypted and
therefore, accessible for sharing for website and apps. Online Backblaze backup, however,
encrypts user data and is available only for the owner to use and access.
