Engineering Management is a field that concentrates in the application of Engineering
Principles for the effective planning and operations of managing manufacturing or
industrial. The five (5) M's of Engineering management are Manpower, Machines,
Material, Method and Money.
Areas of Engineering Management are Product Development, manufacturing,
construction, design engineering, industrial engineering, technology and production.
The four function of Engineering Management are planning, organizing, leading and
controlling. Planning is a function of management that involves setting objectives and
determining a course of action or achieving those objectives. There are many different
types of planning, those are strategic planning, intermediate planning and operational
planning
• Organizing is the function of management that involves developing an
organizational structure and allocating human resources to ensure the
accomplishment of the objectives.
The structure of the organization is the framework within which effort is
coordinated, it is usually represented by an organization chart which provide a
graphic representation of the chain of command within an organization.
• Leading involves the social and informal resources of influence that we use to
inspire action taken by orders. Some leadership traits maybe useful in developing
effective leaders such as a high level of personal drive, the desire to lead,
personal integrity, self-confidence, analytical ability, knowledge of the company,
charisma, creativity and flexibility.
• Controlling consists of verifying whether everything occurs in conformities with
the plans adopted, instructions issued and principles established
The control process consists of four steps namely stablishing performance objectives
and standards, measuring actual performance, comparing actual performance to
objectives and standard, taking necessary action base on the results of the
comparisons.
The main functional areas of Engineering Management consist of production, marketing
and finance. Production management involves in product planning and development,
plant location, layout and maintenance, production systems and machines.
Production management involves in product planning and development, plant location,
layout and maintenance, production systems and machines. Marketing Management is
the analysis, planning, implementation and control of programs designed to bring out
desired changes with target market for the purpose of achieving organizational
objectives
It relies heavily on designing the organization's offering in terms of the target market
needs and desires and using effective pricing, communication and promotion, motivate
and service the market. Financial Management can be look upon as the study of
relationship between the raising of funds and deployment of funds. Financial
Management involves mainly three (3) decisions pertaining to investment policies,
method of financing, dividend decisions
Engineering Management has a huge part in broadening knowledge in engineering's
work most specially with novice engineers that wants to pursue Engineering
Management. This lesson taught several knowledges in Engineering Management such
as Application of Engineering Principles, Planning and Operations and Manufacturing or
Industrial. Before I studied this lesson, I have so much question in the process of work
of a Civil Engineer and on how Engineers properly executed their work in fields or office.
And as I self-studied the lesson, it somehow shed a light from my questions and gave
detailed explanation about Engineering Management.
