CRL : A PROGRAM to improve Grade 6 learners reading habit in English at St.
I. RATIONALE:
They say it for reason that books are your best friends. While growing up the
best habit you can inculcate is reading because you become used at read. The book
that you read plays a very important role your upbringing as they are your guide for
journey as life. Book is the best way to get acquainted with extra ordinary word in
English language. Reading books will help you learn new words and demonstrate
different way in which you can use them in your daily expression. This will ultimately
improve your personal vocabulary also to understand the grammar of any language,
reading stories and articles of that particular language will increase your depth
Second laguage at various grades of their schooling (Chizwina 2011; Gallgher 2009;
Mokhtari, Reichard & Gardner 2009). In arguing for the importance of being able to read,
Palani (2012: 91) states that being able to read effectively is the most important avenue
engage in good reading habits to improve their reading ability. Learners have to be
introduced to pleasure to form good reading habits, which will then transcend into
improved academic reading skills (Scott & Saaiman 2016). It is at primary level that
skills, which are to be applied in different schooling subjects in secondary and tertiary
institutions.
21st Century Learners now a days are exposed to gadgets and they more
appreciate it than reading books just like the learners of St. Catherine Parochial School

of Leon, Iloilo. Researchers observed that the grade 6 learners have lack of desire in
reading books. They posses poor reading habits. They tend to watch videos than
reading stories. Learners most of the time use their leisure in playing online games than
reading books. As part of intervention and remedy for improving the reading habits of
Grade 6 Learners of St. Catherine Parochial School, we have the CRL Program. CRL
stands for “Comfort Room for Learners” is a program to improve the reading habits of
Grade 6 learners of St. Catherine Parochial School that can innovate the reading habit
of learners. Through this program the learner will adapt a reading environment and be
motivated to expose in different reading materials. The learners will be provided more
reading materials that are attractive to them. This Program will provide the learners a
reading corner their classroom with a comfortable spot for them to read. For reading
there are many things which can interfere with effective reading habits. It includes the
physical environment and different types of reading materials. The learners will be given
a certain time to use the reading corner whenever they desire to read.
The purpose of this study is to integrate the CRL Program to improve the Reading
habits of Grade 6 Learners of St. Catherine Parochial School. The research addresses

III. ACTION RESEARCH METHODS
A. Sampling
This paper focuses on the fifteen learners at risk in Reading of the Sixth Grade
checklist. The learners will be observe by the researchers during their English class and
during their vacant time. The observation focuses on their practices and habits in
reading. The checklist that will be given to the learners will assess on their reading
habits.
C. Ethical Issues
First, the researcher will obtain approval from the school principal to conduct
actiom research. Afterwards the parents and learners will be requested to sign a
consent form. The purpose and benefits derived from the research will then be
