CRL Program Action Research

This action research proposal aims to implement the CRL Program to improve the reading habits of Grade 6 learners at St. Catherine Parochial School in Iloilo, Philippines. The CRL Program will create a comfortable reading corner in the classroom with attractive reading materials. It will be tested over three weeks with 15 at-risk readers through observations and checklists before and after. The goal is to motivate students to read more during their leisure time rather than playing games or watching videos. If successful, it could help develop better academic reading skills and vocabulary. The proposal outlines the research questions, methodology, work plan, costs, and references to guide the study.

CRL : A PROGRAM to improve Grade 6 learners reading habit in English at St.

Catherine Parochial School, Leon, Iloilo

I. RATIONALE:

They say it for reason that books are your best friends. While growing up the

best habit you can inculcate is reading because you become used at read. The book

that you read plays a very important role your upbringing as they are your guide for

journey as life. Book is the best way to get acquainted with extra ordinary word in

English language. Reading books will help you learn new words and demonstrate

different way in which you can use them in your daily expression. This will ultimately

improve your personal vocabulary also to understand the grammar of any language,

reading stories and articles of that particular language will increase your depth

understanding about it.

It is globally known that children usually struggle with reading in English as a

Second laguage at various grades of their schooling (Chizwina 2011; Gallgher 2009;

Mokhtari, Reichard & Gardner 2009). In arguing for the importance of being able to read,

Palani (2012: 91) states that being able to read effectively is the most important avenue

of effective learning and academic achievement. It is therefore necessary that learners

engage in good reading habits to improve their reading ability. Learners have to be

introduced to pleasure to form good reading habits, which will then transcend into

improved academic reading skills (Scott & Saaiman 2016). It is at primary level that

learners need to be exposed to reading for pleasure, in developing academic reading

skills, which are to be applied in different schooling subjects in secondary and tertiary

institutions.

21st Century Learners now a days are exposed to gadgets and they more

appreciate it than reading books just like the learners of St. Catherine Parochial School

3
of Leon, Iloilo. Researchers observed that the grade 6 learners have lack of desire in

reading books. They posses poor reading habits. They tend to watch videos than

reading stories. Learners most of the time use their leisure in playing online games than

reading books. As part of intervention and remedy for improving the reading habits of

Grade 6 Learners of St. Catherine Parochial School, we have the CRL Program. CRL

stands for “Comfort Room for Learners” is a program to improve the reading habits of

Grade 6 learners of St. Catherine Parochial School that can innovate the reading habit

of learners. Through this program the learner will adapt a reading environment and be

motivated to expose in different reading materials. The learners will be provided more

reading materials that are attractive to them. This Program will provide the learners a

reading corner their classroom with a comfortable spot for them to read. For reading

there are many things which can interfere with effective reading habits. It includes the

physical environment and different types of reading materials. The learners will be given

a certain time to use the reading corner whenever they desire to read.
