Act 2 Vectors

This document outlines an activity on vector addition and properties using three methods: parallelogram method, polygon method, and component method. Students are given three vectors - A, B, and C - and are asked to find the resultant vector using each method. They are instructed to show their work and solutions neatly in provided tables, and then answer questions about properties of vector addition shown in parts A and B of the activity.

Activity 2
VECTORS

I. Objectives:
a. Perform vector operation using different methods.
b. Examine the properties of vector addition.

II. Materials:
Graphing paper
Ruler
Protractor
Pen, Chalk

III. Procedure:
Given: A = 1.00 m 300 N of E; B = 2.00 m 300 W of S, and C = 3.00 m NW. Find the resultant  vector using:
A. Parallelogram Method
1. On a graphing paper, draw the vectors using an appropriate scale.
2. Determine the resultant using parallelogram method. First add A and B first, then  add their resultant to C.
Record your data under trial 1 on Table 2.1. Then for the
data on trial 2, add B and C, then add their resultant to A.

B. Polygon Method
1. Using the vectors in Part A, mark your initial position on the floor and walk A then B and C. Mark your
final position.
2. Draw a line connecting your initial position to your final position. Measure the  length of the line, this
represents your resultant displacement. Record your data in
Trial 1 in Table 2.2.
3. Starting from the same initial position, walk in the following order: B, C, and A.  Repeat procedure number
2. Record your data in Trial 2 in Table 2.2.
4. Starting from the same initial position, walk in the following order: C, B, and A.  Repeat procedure number
2. Record your data in Trial 3 in Table 2.2.

C. Component Method
Using the vectors in part A, determine the resultant vector using component method.  Record your data
in Table 2.3.

Show your complete solution neatly and clearly.

V. Questions
1. What property of vector addition is shown in part A?

2. In part B, did you end up to the same final position in procedures 1, 3, and 4?

3. What property of vector addition is shown in part B?
