A relation relates values from a domain set to a range set and can be represented as ordered pairs (x,y) where x is from the domain and y is from the range. A function is a special type of relation where each domain value is mapped to exactly one range value. Functions can be represented through mapping diagrams, tables of values, or graphs and can be evaluated or have operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication or division performed on them.

Relations

A relation is a rule that relates values from a set of values (called the domain) to a second set of values (called the
range).

A relation is also a set of ordered pairs (x, y).

Domain= first coordinate in relation; (x); input; independent

- The domain of a relation as the set of all possible values that the variable x can take.

Range- second coordinate in relation (y); output; dependent

-one to one

-one to many

-many to one

Functions

A function is a relation where each element in the domain is related to exact one element in the range by some rule.

Ways of representing functions

-mapping diagram

-table of values

-graph

Evaluating functions

Ex

Fundamental operations of functions

-addition of functions

-subtraction of functions

-multiplication of functions

-quotient of functions
