ECE26-Laboratory-Activity 1.1

This document describes an activity for students to simulate a half-wave rectifier circuit using Electronics Workbench simulation software. The activity introduces the software and guides students to construct the circuit by selecting components from the tool bins, connecting them to build the circuit schematic, and then measuring circuit parameters using the software's measurement tools. The goals are for students to get familiar with simulation software and virtually construct and test a half-wave rectifier circuit.

ECE 26 – ELECTRONICS 3:
ELECTRONICS SYSTEMS AND DESIGN

ACTIVITY – 1A
Name: _________________________________ Date Performed: _______________________
Course and Year: ________________________ Date Submitted: _______________________
Student I.D. Number: ______________________ Instructor’s Signature: ___________________

I. Chapter Title: ELECTRONICS SIMULATION SOFTWARE FAMILIARIZATION

II. Module Introduction/Rationale:
The purpose of this module is to familiarize students with the use of a software program
to simulate various electronics circuits. In this activity, the students shall use the Electronics
Workbench v5.12 to create and design a Half-Wave Rectifier Circuit.
III. Module Outcomes:
CO1: Create different circuit configurations, measure circuit parameters and interpret
data.
IV. Lesson Title: Half Wave Rectification Parameters Using Computer Software Simulation
V. Lesson Outcomes
At the end of this topic the learner should be able to:
1. To make use of Electronic Workbench or EWB as computer software for circuit
simulation.
2. To construct half - wave rectifier circuit using EWB.
3. To test half - wave rectifier circuit using EWB.
4. To determine half – wave rectification parameters using EWB.
Discussion:

Computer software for circuit simulation allows modelling of the circuit and analyzes its
operation without using real components, breadboards and actual measuring equipment. Making use of
circuit simulations, designing and modifying circuit to meet a specified performance before
implementing the circuit for its actual application is possible. Many of the colleges and universities allow
students to use circuit simulator because its modelling capability is highly accurate. Students can
integrate this tool on their learning experience. They can design, analyze and test circuits virtually or
with the use of their computers.
On this module Electronic Workbench or EWB is the simulation package for electronic circuits
will be used. This will allow students to draw circuits’ schematic diagram, test circuit parameters and
even display waveforms to analyze, just like on the actual laboratory. You can change parameters and
circuit components easily, which makes "what-if" analysis almost effortless.

Electronics Workbench (EWB)

Note: Each student must have a PC/laptop with an installed Electronics Workbench Program.
Installation and System Requirements can be found online.

The EWB Screen

Start the EWB by double clicking its icon on the desktop or by clicking on Start, then Programs, then
Electronics Workbench and finally the program entry. Figure 2.1 shows the window and the tool bins of
EWB. The tool bins you may use on this activity are the Source Parts, Basic Parts, Diode, Indicator Parts
and the Instrument Parts.
Figure 2.2 shows the Sources Parts Bin. The possible parts to use are the ground connection, the
battery (or dc voltage source), the DC current source, the AC voltage source and the AC current source.

Connecting Components

To connect a circuit, all the components are placed on

the screen and moved around to achieve any desired
arrangement.
Connections among component are formed by click –
and – drag actions.
When the cursor is directed to one end of a
component, a ball will appear when the connector is
engaged.
Click on the left mouse key until the ball appears

Drag a connection to the next component holding the left

mouse key down until a ball appears on other component.

When the mouse key is released, a connection between

elements will have been completed as shown in the
figure.

Following the three – step connection process the

complete circuit is shown.

Measuring Circuit Quantities

An oscilloscope has two independent input

channels A and B
An input for external trigger
Ground connection

An oscilloscope is used to display the waveform of input AC

Voltage Source into the circuit
Drag the oscilloscope onto the circuit window, and double click on
it.
The oscilloscope has four terminals, for two independent input
channels, a trigger input and a ground connection.
The input channels sense voltages with respect to ground.
As long as there is at least one ground terminal attached to your
circuit, it is not necessary to connect the oscilloscope ground.
Connect Channel A to the “+” terminal of the AC Voltage Source
and activate the circuit.

You will have a sine wave on your

oscilloscope screen.
Select AC as input coupling mode. In this
mode the DC component of the signal is
removed.
To get a larger image of the oscilloscope,
try the expand button.

On the expanded display you will find two

vertical line cursors. By moving these
around you can measure time and
amplitude of points on the displayed
traces.

the Indicator Toolbar to the
circuit window.
Drag wires from the voltmeter
terminals to point in your
circuit between which you
want to measure the voltage.
Connect the voltmeter across
or parallel to the component.
To change the mode of
voltmeter for AC or DC mode
select the Voltmeter
