Technical Drawing 7: Sptve

This document provides instruction on learning different lettering styles and techniques, specifically the proper order of strokes when writing letters and numerals. It covers identifying the order of strokes for single-stroke vertical uppercase letters, numerals, and lowercase letters. Students are expected to practice the order of strokes and appreciate its usefulness for mechanical drawings.

This module is designed to be used as a self-study guide to learning various lettering
styles and techniques. The Order of Strokes in Lettering and Making Numerals are
covered in this material. Through this module, you can learn confidently to communicate
ideas through lettering. At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the order of strokes in lettering and making numerals;

2. practice the proper order of strokes in lettering and making numerals; and
3. appreciate the usefulness of learning the proper order of strokes in lettering
and making numerals.

Directions : Read the sentences carefully, write T if the statement is TRUE and
write F if the statement is FALSE.

________ 1. Stroke is a single line or mark made with a pen or brush.

________ 2. A line that runs along to the page or sheet's sides is called, horizontal line.

________ 3. A straight line drawn from the left to the right or from the right to the left is
called, vertical line.

________ 4. Numeral is represented by a number, figure, symbol, or a combination.

________ 5. The letters I, L, T, F, E, and H are the hardest to draw.

________ 6. The following set, P, R, B, U, and J, are considered curve letters.

________ 7. The final group of letters which are based on the circles are C, G, O, Q,
D, and S.

________ 8. The letters M and W must be printed narrower than the rest
of the alphabet.

________ 9. Mechanical drawings also include use of numerals.

________ 10. All of the numeral figures are 6 units and 5 units wide.

to our previous lesson on rule of stability and general proportion of letters. The words
are hidden in horizontal and in vertical directions.

Definition of Terms:

stroke - a single line or mark made with a pen or brush

vertical - a line that runs along to the page or sheet's sides

horizontal - a straight line drawn from the left to the right

or from the right to the left

numeral - a number represented by a figure, symbol,

or a combination of them

Order of strokes in Lettering

The letters I, L, T, F, E, and H should be studied first. Because the basic strokes
are vertical and horizontal, these letters are the easiest to draw. You should practice
writing these letters using the models as a guide.

The following set, P, R, B, U, and J, includes curve strokes aside from vertical and
horizontal strokes.

C, G, O, Q, D, and S are the final group of letters, all of which are based on
the circle.

The letters M and W must be printed broader than the rest of the alphabet. As a
result, it is proposed that its width be 25 percent bigger than the other letters. The
letter I is the thinnest of the alphabet.

Making Numerals

Because numerals are being used in all mechanical drawings, they should be
included too. Except for number 1, all of the figures below are 6 units and 5
units wide. All figures are made up of the same straight and curved strokes that are
used in letters. See Figure 1.

Activity 3:

Directions: Write your thoughts on the usefulness of learning the order of strokes
in lettering and making numerals. What did you feel while doing this activity? Write
your ideas on a separate sheet of paper.

Learning the order of strokes in lettering and making numerals are

necessary towards having a legible and accurate letter style. To letter them
perfectly, the proportions of height and width of various letters must be carefully
executed. In addition, all mechanical drawings also include use of numerals.

Directions: Complete the sentences by writing the letter of the correct answer on
the blank before each number. Choose from the words inside the box.

A. Alphabet D. M and W
B. C, G, O, Q, D, and S E. Numeral
C. I, L, T, F, E, and H F. P, R, B, U, and J
