1. Answer all questions.

Answer the following short questions with appropriate logic (with in one-two sentences). 1×

a) What are the major sources of losses in micro-strip lines at very high frequency? 8=
b) What are the dominating modes in circular and rectangular waveguides?
c) How do you define dynamic range of a microwave system? 8
d) Among strip line and micro-strip line which is more lossy and why?
1. e) A lossless passive RF delay line is connected to a transmission line of 50 Ω
characteristic impedance. The input impedance of delay line is 60 Ω and its output is
matched terminated. What will be the insertion loss in dB of delay line?
f) Why low noise amplifier should have high gain in a microwave system?
g) Write two properties of the scattering matrix for a passive lossless network.
h) Why it is sufficient to calculate static capacitance C to determine characteristics
impedance of a transmission line even when the propagation mode is quasi TEM?

a) An amplifier with a bandwidth of 1 GHz has a gain of 15 dB and a noise temperature


of 250 K. If the 1 dB compression point occurs for an input power level of 0 dBm, what 2×5
is the linear dynamic range of the amplifier?

b) Calculate the power received by the receiver antenna when a target of RCS 2 m 2 is
illuminated by a 3 GHz, 5 kW signal at a distance of 5 km. Assume the antenna gain
to be 30 dB.
c) A rectangular-cavity resonator has dimensions of a = 5 cm, b = 2 cm, and d = 15 cm.
Compute: i) The resonant frequency of the dominant mode for an air-filled cavity ii) The
resonant frequency of the dominant mode for a dielectric-filled cavity of 𝜖𝑟 = 2.56.
2. d) A circular cavity resonator with 𝑑 = 2𝑎, is to be designed to resonate at 5.0 GHz in the
𝑇𝐸011 mode. If the cavity is made from copper and is Teflon-filled (𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑚𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑖𝑣𝑖𝑡𝑦 =
2.08, 𝑡𝑎𝑛𝛿 = 0.0004, 𝑋’01 = 3.832), find its dimensions.
e) Find the ABCD matrix for the circuit shown below.

The distance from the load to the first minimum voltage is 50Ω line is 0.12𝜆 and the standing
wave ratio 𝑠 = 4.
3. a) Find the load impedance 𝑍𝐿 .

Consider the wireless local area network (WLAN) receiver front-end shown below, where the
bandwidth of the bandpass filter is 100 MHz centered at 2.4 GHz. If the system is at room
temperature, find the noise figure of the overall system. What is the resulting signal-to-noise
ratio at the output if the input signal power level is −90 dBm? Can the components be
rearranged to give a better noise figure?
