We all know that before we graduate and receive our diploma, we need to
undergo or take our National Service Training Program or NSTP subject first during our
first year at college. I know that’s the kind of topic most students take for granted and do
not attach much importance to, it’s a topic some students would become lazy at
attendance. I’m not quite sure why they have those feelings, but I think it’s because
there are some students who don’t know about the purpose of the program or the
positive impact the topic can give them that’s why some students can say “Sus NSTP
raman ni, dili man gihapon ni apil sa GPA”. Whatever the cause, students still should
not hate this subject, and should not take NSTP for granted. As a matter of fact, we
should be taking NSTP more seriously. Only because of the lectures, and the
preparation. It’s your opportunity to think, and you just need to get involved. Who
knows, maybe you might even learn some useful stuff, which help you plan for your
future.
So let us know what is National Security Training Program or NSTP? Section 12
of Republic Act No. 9163 also known as National Security Training Program (NSTP) Act
of 2001 is a program hiam that aims to enhance civic consciousness and defense
preparedness in the youth by developing the ethics of service and patriotism while
undergoing training in any three Program Components. First is the Reverse Officers’
Training Corps (ROTC) that motivate, train, organize and mobilize the youth for national
defense preparedness. Second is the Literacy Training Service (LTS) that trains the
students to teach literacy and numercy skills to school children, out of school youths
and other segments of society in need of their services. Lastly, the Civic Welfare
Training Service (CWTS), activities that contributes to the general welfare and the
betterment of life for the members of the community or the enhancement of its facilities,

volunteers whom the national can call upon in cases where services are needed. The
aim of this program is to acknowledge the vital role of the Youth in nation building,
promote youth knowledge and improve their physical, economic, spiritual, intellectual
and social well-being.
The reason why we need to be serious about this subject because NSTP is
useful to students train to become well-disciplined and efficient. NSTP are effective in
teaching self-improvement, performance, and community involvement. The NSTP aims
to promote and integrate values education, transformational leadership, spirit of
patriotism and nationalism and sustainable social mobilization for youth development,
community and national security.
The reasons why NSTP subject should not be taken for granted is because of the
various learning opportunity it provides. First, the self-awareness and management
through basic citizenship training. Self-awareness is important to understand and
recognize the strengths and weaknesses of an individual wherein they can determine as
to where their ability suits and what areas are need to be improved. The basic
citizenship training gives them a sense of worth and also helps them to understand their
place in society as well as positively identifying the roles of others in society as well.
Second, basic knowledge and skills in disaster preparedness and management. This
learning opportunity greatly helps in reducing the risk of disaster and save maximum
lives and livelihood during any disaster situation. If students are taught by this type of
measure it is to observe highest standard of morality and devotion, while serving the
people and the country. Lastly, to love our country through personal and communal
service. Community services develops and increase sense of social responsibility. So, if
students are taught by this kind of learning and let them be engage in communal service
it provides them the opportunity to become active members of society at large as well
as provide service to those who need it the most. Overall, the goal of the NSTP law is to
uphold the role of the youth in nation-building.
