This document outlines an experiment to calculate the specific heat of water and metals using a coffee cup calorimeter. It describes filling a coffee cup with water, heating it, and monitoring the temperature decrease over time. The same process is then used to heat a metal sample and monitor its temperature change in the calorimeter. Formulas for calculating specific heat are provided. The goal is to use the calorimeter to determine the specific heat of water, copper, and tungsten by analyzing temperature measurements over time.

Title:
Calculation of specific heat of reaction using calorimeter.

Aim:
To find the specific heat of water and metal by using a
coffee-cup calorimeter.
Apparatus:
1) Coffee cups

2) Mercury Thermometer

3) Beaker

4) Gas stove

5) Metal piece

6) Water dispensing machine

Theory:
To raise the temperature of a given body from a initial
temperature Ti to a final temperature Tf , we require some
energy. That energy is heat energy. The heat energy is
dependent on mass of body, specific heat of the body, final
and initial temperature of the system. This process of
measuring heat capacities is called
CALORIMETRY. Calorimetry is mainly performed to find
specific heat capacity of a metal, heat of fusion, heat of
dissolution, etc. A calorimeter is a device used to measure
the quantity of heat transferred to or from an object. Most
experiments use heavy and expensive equipment for the
purpose of calorimetry. But unlike most experiments coffee
cup calorimeter is inexpensive and lightweight. The
apparatus used in a coffee-cup calorimeter are easily
available like Styrofoam cups, gas-stove, mercury
thermometer, etc. Calorimetry covers one of the most
important aspects of Thermodynamics. There are various
types of calorimeters.
Such as:
• Adiabatic Calorimeters
• Reaction Calorimeters
• Coffee-cup Calorimeter
• Bomb Calorimeters (Constant Volume Calorimeters)
• Constant Pressure Calorimeters
• Differential Scanning Calorimeters
Out of these calorimeters, coffee-cup calorimeter is one of
the easiest methods to understand the phenomena of heat
transfer. Calorimetry majorly involves concept of heat and
specific heat capacity (c).
To calculate these we use certain formulae such as:
q = mcΔ T where, q = heat, m = mass, T = temperature Here
the heat depends on mass of the metal or system but
specific heat is irrespective of any change in the mass.
Value of specific heat for a material remains constant
irrespective of change in temperature or mass taken.
Procedure:

First of-all we will take a coffee-cup and fill it with 50 ml tap

water by pressing TAP button on the water dispensing
system. Then we will tap on the HOT button so that the cup
shifts from it place, sets under the hot water tap and fills with
about 50ml hot water. Then we close the cup with another
cup and insert a mercury thermometer. With setting time
intervals of 15 seconds and note the temperature from the
thermometer for up to 180 seconds. Then we plot a graph of
ln T vs. time for the readings we have got. Now by this
process using the formula of specific heat we find the specific
heat of the coffee-cup calorimeter. By this way we have
calibrated the calorimeter.

Now we will find specific heat of a given metal. For that we

first choose a metal from the dropdown menu. It can be
copper or tungsten. Then we take a beaker filled with water
and put it on the stove. We drop in the metal piece in the
beaker and then turn on the stove. Now we let the
temperature of water reach till its boiling point i.e. 100
degree Celsius. Then we will take the metal piece and put it
in our coffee-cup calorimeter. Then we note the change in
temperature in the thermometer at intervals of 15 seconds,
up to 165 seconds. Then we plot graph of ln T vs. time. Then
we calculate the value of specific heat for the given material.
Then we can compare the graphs of both the metals and
note the similar behaviour in variation of temperature with
respect to time.

Conclusion:
Thus we were able to calculate the specific heat of water,
copper and tungsten by using a coffee-cup calorimeter.
