This assignment contains 3 questions about control systems for the MIET 2006 Automatic Control subject. Question 1 involves adding a tachometer to an original system to improve its transient response. Question 2 involves obtaining open-loop and closed-loop transfer functions for a given system and checking stability using Nyquist criterion. Question 3 requires finding open-loop transfer functions, plotting Bode diagrams, and evaluating stability for 3 different control systems based on their phase and gain margins.

MIET 2006 Automatic Control

ASSIGNMENT 2 (2021, Semester 2)

This assignment contains 3 questions and is worth 9 marks (or 9%) for the final
assessment of the subject.
RMIT Classification: Trusted

Question 1

The natural frequency of the original system shown in Figure 1a is 12 rad/s. In order to improve its
transient response, a tachometer is to be added into the original system to yield damping ratio of 0.65.

a) Calculate K and K2.

b) Use Simulink to model the system (Unit-step input).
c) Plot system responses (before and after adding the tachometer) and discuss how the system
response is improved after adding the tachometer.

Question 2

For a system with block diagram shown in Figure 2 where

1
𝐺1 (𝑠) =
𝑠+1
1
𝐺2 (𝑠) =
3𝑠 + 2

𝐻(𝑠) = 2

(a) Obtain the expression of open-loop transfer function.

(b) Obtain the expression of close-loop transfer function.
(c) Use MATLAB to plot the close-loop system time response under a unit step input.
(d) Manually sketch the polar plot of the open-loop transfer function on a graph paper (please list
data in a table for at least 15 points to construct the plot, you can use Excel or CAD, as long as
it shows clearly how you calculate and get the points for polar plot).
(e) Check the system stability by Nyquist criterion.

Question 3

Figure 3 gives three control systems. For each system, please:

a) Find its open-loop transfer function.

b) Use Matlab to plot Bode diagram then find out its phase margin and gain margin.
c) Evaluate the system stability based on Bode diagram.
