Why are we learning Tableau? Tableau is a great visualization tool used in many businesses world-wide.
A lot of companies use it with flat files, like Excel spreadsheets to display data.
Tableau:
Once you have opened Tableau you will need to import the supplied spreadsheet of data. The
spreadsheet you will import is called “Arrival by country of origin FY2016 TOTALS”
Click on the Microsoft Excel link as shown below to import the sheet.

Select the Worksheet option (Sheet1) on the bottom left of the Tableau Window. You will now see the
following Dimensions and Measures options based on your MS Excel dataset.

As you can see, there’s not a lot here, Country of Origin and Total, Latitude, Longitude……
1). Select Country of Origin (from Dimensions) and drag that to the ROWS. Select TOTAL (from
Measures) and drag that to the Column. Your sheet space should look like the following screen shot.
As you can see, we’re only showing countries A through E. That’s ok for now, lets look at some of the
different options we have for displaying data.
Under Show Me (top right of the screen) Click on the box on the top right (it’s called Highlight Table)

Obviously a little easier to read, but what if we wanted to see the countries with the most immigration
to the United States?
How would this look on a world map? Click on the map, on the right side under Show Me
Now, take a few moments and play around with the various charts/graphs that you can use. Note, not
all can be used by all data, those that cannot will be grayed out.

For example, let’s click on the packed bubbles at the bottom right of “Show Me”, above.
From the size of the bubbles we have some idea of the largest areas, but let’s make it a little more
readable. From Measures, drag Total to Label
But let’s make it a little more colorful. Drag Country of Origin from Dimensions to Color.

So, you see, you have a lot of options and a lot of things you can do with Tableau. Play around! Have
fun!
