Bridge with wide footway & cycle track. Consider a bridge
of span 30m, carriageway width 10m and has footway 4m
wide on each side. based on BD37/01 Calculate:
- the live load intensity on the footway
- the Accidental wheel loading on the footway.
- Horizontal Loads due to vehicle collision with parapet
(high level of containment parapets)

HW3
(a) the live load intensity on the footway
•Clause 7.1.1, for loaded length 30m <36m, so the footways
load = 0.8(5.0)=4 kN/m2
Load intensity on first m = 4kN/m2
Load intensity on 2nd m = 4 kN/m2
Load intensity on 3rd m = 0.85(4)= 3.4 kN/m2
Load intensity on 4rd m = 0.7(4)= 2.8 kN/m2

Note : Put the load any where
Clause 6.5.1 Nominal Live Load
(Footway/Cycle Track)
• Clause 7.1.1, for loaded length 40m >36m, nominal live
load on elements supporting footways/cycle track only =
k(5.0) kN/m2
= (0.9)5.0 = 4.5 kN/m2
• Clause 6.5.1 nominal load for elements which support
footways/cycle tracks and a highway loading = 0.8(4.5) =
3.6 kN/m2
• Since width of footway 3m > 2m,
Load intensity on first 1m = 3.6 kN/m2
Load intensity on 2nd 1m = 3.6=3.6 kN/m2
Load intensity on other 1m = 0.85(3.6)= 3.06 kN/m2
• Average intensity = (3.6+3.6 + 3.06)/3 = 3.35 kN/m2
