2. Evaluate a function;
3. Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division of functions;
4. Evaluate the composition of a function; and
4. Solve problems involving functions.
Pre-Test
Read each question carefully, then write the chosen letter on a separate sheet of paper.

E as a function of the number of hours h that she worked?
A. x2 - x + 2 B. x2 - x + 5 C. x2 - 5x + 5 D. x2 - x - 2
5. What is f(g(2)) = ?
A. 13 B. 49 C. 10 D. 27

There are four ways in writing a relation: (1) listing of the
ordered pairs, (2) mapping, (3) table of values, and (4) graph.

-2 4
-1 7
LISTING
MAPPING
TABLE OF VALUES
GRAPHING
Example 1
LISTING
{(1,4), (3,6), (5,8), (7,9) FUNCTION - all of the x- coordinates are unique and distinct
{(1,2), (4,2), (6,2), (8,2)} FUNCTION - all of the x- coordinates are unique and distinct
{(-3,4), (5,7), (-3,9), (11, 14)} NOT A FUNCTION - two x-coordinates repeat
Again, you need to pay attention to the x-coordinates. If an element in the domain is
mapped to more than one element in the range, then the relation is not a FUNCTION
Example 2
Which of the following graphs are functions?
A. B. C.
Solution: Graph C is a graph of a function, while A, and B are not.
Example 3
Below are examples of functions in real-life:
1. To each vehicle, there corresponds a license number.
2. To each teacher, there corresponds a PRC ID number.
3. To each meal service, there corresponds a price cost.
4. To each water bill, there corresponds the amount of water consumed.
Let 𝑥 be the number of minutes used, and 𝑓(𝑥) be its corresponding monthly charge.
Solution: Since the given is 630 minutes, you will use the second function.
f(630) = 8 (630 - 600) + 1300 Add first the given number inside the parenthesis
Activity 1:
Please Relate Me!
Determine how one variable is related to the other variable in the following statements.
1. The height of a football attained depends upon the number of seconds after it was kicked.
2. The number of pages read is related to the time one started reading.
3. The overtime pay of an employee is related to the number of hours he worked overtime.
4. The amount paid for a long-distance call depends on how long the call has been.
5. The number of kilograms of rice consumed by a family for a month is related to the number
of its members.
Activity 2:
Evaluate Yourself
1. In a furniture company, the three employees read their contract which stated that their basic
salary is Php 15,000 plus a 10% commission for every furniture worth less than Php 20,000,
12% commission for every furniture worth Php 20,000 up to Php 45,000, and a commission of
15% for every furniture above Php 45,000. Write a piece-wise function for this problem.
Example 5
Consider the function h(x) = 6x +1. Evaluate the function when x = 0 and x = -5. To evaluate
the function, you substitute x with the input value and calculate. The result is the output value.
Solution:
h(x) = 6x + 1 Write the original function.
h(0) = 6(0) + 1 Substitute 0 for x
h(0) = 0 + 1 Multiply
h(0) = 1 Simplify
Solution:
h(x) = 6x + 1 Write the original function
h(-5) = 6(-5) + 1 Substitute -5 for x
h(-5) = -30 + 1 Multiply
h(-5) = -29 Simplify
Given: b. h(x) = 6x + 1. Find h(2x + 3)
h(x) = 6x + 1 Write original function
h(2x + 3) = 6(2x + 3) + 1 Substitute “2x + 3” for x
h(2x + 3) = 12x + 18 + 1 Distributive Property
h(2x + 3) = 12x + 19 Simplify
Example 6
The function f(x) = 5x + 40 models the yearly membership cost for a pocketbook rental club,
where x is the number of pocketbooks rented. Last year, Sol rented 19 pocketbooks while Jen
rented thrice the amount of pocketbooks of Sol. How much more did Jen pay last year than Sol?
Solution: f(x), x is the input
Let x = be the number of pocketbook rented
Sol Jen
x = 19 x = 19 × 3= 57
f(x) = 5x + 40, evaluate the function for Sol
f(19) = 5 (19 ) + 40 Replace or substitute 19 to the x
f(19) = 95 + 40 Multiply 5 to 19
f(19) = 135 Simplify
f(x) = 5x + 40, evaluate the function for Jen
f(57) = 5 (57 ) + 40 Replace or substitute 57 to the x
f(57) = 285 + 40 Multiply 5 to 57
f(57) = 325 Simplify
From the result above, you can now subtract for Jen and Sol
Php 325.00 - Php135.00 = Php 190.00 Jen paid last year more than Sol
COLUMN A COLUMN B
2. g(1) = x2 -2x -6 b. -7
4. f(-2) = x2 - 4x + 7 d. -6
Example: The function defined by f(x) = x2 - 4x + 1 is the sum of g (x) = x2 and h (x) = -4x + 1.
Hence, the following operations of functions are shown below:
Example 7
Solution:
g g ( x)
( x) ; h( x ) 0
D. h h( x ) Definition of quotient of functions
(x 2 - 4x - 5)
= (4x - 20) Simplify the expressions
(x - 5) (x 1)
= 4(x - 5) The denominator should not equal to 0
(x 1)
= 4
Composition of a Function
The term "composition of functions" (or "composite function") refers to combining together two
or more functions in a manner where the output from one function becomes the input for the
next function.
The composition of the function f with g is denoted by f ○ g and is defined by the equation:
( fg )( x) f ( g ( x))
The domain of the composition functions f ○ g is the set of all x such that
Example 8
Given f ( x) = x2 - 3x and g ( x) = 2x+ 1, find: ( f ○ g ) ( x) and ( g ○ f ) ( x)
Solution:
A. Because ( f ○ g ) ( x) means f (g ( x) ), you must replace each occurrence of x in the function
f by g(x).
f ( x) = x2 - 3x Given equation for f
( f ○ g ) ( x) = f (g ( x) ) = ( g(x)) - 3 (g(x))
2 Replace x by g(x)
= ( 2x + 1) - 3 ( 2x + 1 )
2 Replace g(x) by 2x + 1
= (4x 2 + 4x+ 1)- 3( 2x + 1) Square the binomial
= 4x 2 + 4x+ 1 -6x - 3 Simplify, combine like terms
= 4x - 2x- 2

1. Mr. De Mesa put up a business that offers computer repair which he charges a base of
₱ 350.00 for each visit and an additional of ₱ 20.00 per hour for his labor, given by the
function C(r) = 350 + 20r . He also has rentals at his shop with a base of ₱ 15.00 for the
first hour and an additional of ₱ 8.00 per thirty minutes defined by the function S(r) = 15 +
8r. Determine the C(r) +S(r).
2. Suppose that the Makpay Online Shop sold number of t-shirts denoted by the function M(x)
= x, and the selling price per shirt is stated by P(x)=199-5x. Find ( M ● P )(x) and describe
what does it represents. A
Remember
FUNCTION NOTATION - y = f(x)
x = independent variable or domain (input)
y = dependent variable or range (output)
When you look at the function machine, do not stop in just one input or output. Input three or
four numbers to prove the rule works on all the input numbers.
Function Operations definition
