BACHELOR IN BUSINESS TEACHER EDUCATION

Level III, Phase 1 Accreditation Survey Visit – August 26-30, 2014 Page 197
Area III – Curriculum and Instruction

 Description on the congruence of the curricular program with the vision and mission of the
institution and the goals of the academic unit.

Epistemology is the branch of philosophy that examines the nature of knowledge,

the processes through which we acquire knowledge, and the value of knowledge (Wong,
Yew Leong, 2008). Knowledge and information can become obsolete or irrelevant after a
time. Things have improved in the last five years, as far as education is concerned making
it curricular programs of quality, relevant and responsive to the present needs not just with
the community we live in, but in the global society we represent in.

Consequently, the College of Education provides greater emphasis on the teaching

and learning of process skills (research and writing skills, critical thinking, creative thinking,
oral presentation/demonstrations, and etc.) incorporated in the curriculum. Likewise, faculty
members from the College of Education embraced these changes through the integration in
teaching strategies research, critical and creative thinking skills, aside from attending
training to continuously improve the quality of academic experiences across the educational
system.

 Description of how the curriculum was designed, developed, monitored, reviewed, and
approved by authorities concerned, including the participation of the academic community
and the stakeholders.

All curricula were redesigned to equip our students with global competencies, values,
and work ethics in facing the mega forces that were buffeting the world, namely, the
knowledge explosion that was transforming every segment of human societies
everywhere, be it in education, the social sciences, governance, administration, and the
changing world itself, which was characterized by the emergence of a new global order,
the removal of boundaries, the mind-boggling technological changes and the ever-
increasing global competition, as well as new forms of cooperation.

Guidelines promulgated were followed in revising each curriculum by discipline.

These guidelines established a general framework of organizational responsibilities and
procedures within which programs and courses could evolve in a direction that enhanced
or maintained relevance and quality.

Four (4) university wide groups were responsible for reviewing proposed changes
in the curricula. These were the Department Curriculum Evaluation Committee, the
College Curriculum Evaluation Committee, the University Evaluation Committee, and the
University Academic Council.

For the proposed new programs, the approval of the Board of Regents was
required.

B. Instructional Process, Methodologies and Learning Opportunities

BACHELOR IN BUSINESS TEACHER EDUCATION

Level III, Phase 1 Accreditation Survey Visit – August 26-30, 2014 Page 206
Area III – Curriculum and Instruction

 Major Learning Opportunities

 Description of procedures adopted in the production of instructional materials

It is a must to have a course outline or syllabus for every subject in the BBTE
Program. The BBTE Chair assigns a subject specialist or chair and faculty members to
form a committee to handle the preparation of the course outline/syllabus after which, the
Chair submits all these materials to the Dean of the College for final approval.

To date, there are already books, workbooks and module writers in the College.
These instructional materials are forwarded to the Dean’s office for approval by a
Committee assigned by the former.

The administration encourages, too, the use of self-made or locally authored

instructional materials. In this regard, the faculty members who are good writers are
motivated to develop modules and write books either in group or individually. These are
forwarded to the University Textbook and Instructional Materials Evaluation Committee
(UTIMEC) for evaluation and approval for use in the College. It is an honor for the College
for having the Dean of the College, Dr. Milagrina A. Gomez and the Director of the Open
University, Dr. Carmencita L. Castolo as members of the UTIMEC. Likewise, some of the
faculty members are designated as evaluators depending on the following revised
qualifications:

1. At least a Master’s degree holder in the discipline;

2. Has written at least three (3) research studies that have been presented or published;
and,
3. Has taught the course for at least five (5) years.

Other faculty members personally prepare web-enabled instructional materials. It

is hope that soon, this will be done by all faculty members in this manner, too.

Instruments

In making sure that students absorbed necessary information—specific facts,

data, theories, methods, examinations were administered at the end of each year.
Students’ performances are best recognized and recorded with the evaluation
measures used by the teachers. Evaluation is a key success factor for any curriculum,
thus the faculty of the College of Education decides very well on what evaluation
measures to use in their respective classes providing feedback for individual learning
strategies and achieving program learning goals. Copies of the examination given to
the students are returned and at times were kept properly and confidentially.

Quizzes – a long and short list of objective and essay type of tests given to students
after each topic/subject were discussed by the professors.

Recitation/Class Participation – a face to face oral examination on the students’

readiness and preparation on specific subject matter.

Oral Examination – testing the verbal competencies of communication students and

ability to express their thoughts through report presentation.

Written Report – students will be graded based on the papers written by the students.

Research Output – students are tasked to do research related to their subjects.

Midterm Examination/Requirement – an examination (written proposals) given to

students based on the GS Faculty Members’ approved midterm requirements.

Final Examination/Requirements – approved final examination based on the Course

requirements.

Rubric Assessment/ Scoring Rubric - provide the criteria for evaluating

and scoring student performance. (Teaching demonstration in the schools where they
have their practice teaching, Evaluation forms for Teaching Demonstration, Thesis
Defenses)

Microteaching - is an organized teaching improvement technique where the

experimental teacher teaches a small group of audience (peers), which is recorded for
review after each teaching section.

Speed Test – a type of test that monitors students speed in keying letter/practice set in
real time using the keyboard either in typewriter or in computer.

D. Classroom Management

 Description of the system to ensure effective classroom management

 Maintaining classroom discipline

 Monitoring student progress
 Developing responsibility and initiative among student
 Enhancing the pedagogical skills of the faculty

E. Graduation Requirements

disseminated

Students admitted to the program must pass the PUP Entrance Test and must
have a high school average of 82% or higher with an English grade of 81% or higher.

Any student who at the end of the semester obtains final grade of 5.0 in 15% or
less of the total number of academic units in which he is registered shall be warned by the
Dean to improve his work; if he fails or gets incomplete marks in 16-30% of the total
number of academic units in which he is registered, he shall be warned by the Dean and
his load shall be reduced by 3 units.

cleared not later than two weeks before the end of his last semester. No student shall be
issued a diploma and transcript of records unless he has been cleared all accountabilities.

Academic and graduation requirements are disseminated to the students by

conducting General and College Freshmen Orientation. Likewise, individual classroom
advisers further explain the guidelines. All students are also furnished with the STUDENT

F. Administrative Support for Effective Instruction

The management of College of Education is composed of the Dean and two (2)
chairpersons for the Department of Business Teacher Education and Department of
Secondary and Elementary Education, are very supportive to the four academic functions
of the College, namely instruction, research, extension and production.

In this regard, the Dean oversees the overall implementation of the two (2)
curricular offerings to ensure effective and efficient delivery of quality and excellent
programs in the college.

Instruction

BACHELOR IN BUSINESS TEACHER EDUCATION

Level III, Phase 1 Accreditation Survey Visit – August 26-30, 2014 Page 215
Area III – Curriculum and Instruction

Quality assurance in instruction is being observed in the College as evidenced by

the two consecutive online faculty evaluations were the College of Education ranked No.1
as per students’ assessment. It is therefore assumed that the faculty members are always
ready for the day’s lesson and prepare all the time to meet the needs of the students.
Every subject teacher is expected to have a syllabus either prepared by the College or the
individual faculty himself. Copies of the examinations given to the students are also
submitted to the College by the faculty members. Departmental exams are administered
on a scheduled date for all the board subjects in BBTE.

Monitoring attendance to classes of faculty members is on continuous practice of

the college, reports received from the students are taken seriously by the chairpersons
who once in a while checking faculty members’ attendance aside from the reports provided
by the designated checkers from the HRD of the University. The same will be forwarded to
the office of the Dean by Human Resources Department through the checker’s form slip
informing about the faculty absences. In case that the faculty member has to be excused
due to some circumstances, classes will be notified and will be provided with substitute
faculty or will be given activity/ies.

Likewise, to ensure effective delivery of instructions, the College sincerely

implements faculty development program through attendances to the different lectures or
seminars on innovative teaching strategies and other classroom
development/improvement of topics. Some of the faculty members’ research papers
qualified for presentation to international and local invitations; while other faculty members
visited schools to identify best practices of high schools, universities and colleges in Hong
Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, South Korea and etc. this form a part of
faculty retooling which are given preferential attention by the administrators to guarantee
effective and quality instruction and in producing globally prepared and competitive team of
faculty members.

Similarly, classroom facilities were also checked and continuously updated for
better facilitation of learning. A multimedia room was made available intended not just for
the different university activities, but can also be maximized for the faculty facilitation of
day’s lesson intended for a bigger crowd or group of students. LCD projectors and laptops
are also made available for the use of both the faculty and the students, combined with
self-made modules and other instructional materials for the subject/s being taught.

Level III, Phase 1 Accreditation Survey Visit – August 26-30, 2014 Page 216
Area III – Curriculum and Instruction

Equipment, furniture and fixtures in the faculty rooms and that of the classrooms
are monitored and updated which were outsourced from the alumni as well as from other
partners and linkages of the College by the administrators.

Research and Extension

In encouraging more faculty research outputs, the PUP administration with CoEd
reiteration of requiring the faculty members to produce either individual or team researches
to be submitted at the end of the year or submitting the same for institutional research
funding as allocated from the budget of the Vice President for Research, Extension,
Development and Planning. A number of CoEd faculty members’ proposals were
approved for institutional funding such as that of; Dr. Carmencita L. Castolo, Dr.
Junithesmer Rosales, Dr. Rovelina Jacolbia, Dr. Silvia Ambag, Prof. Lizyl Rebusquillo,
Prof. Daizylyn Palillo, and Prof. Sherry Ann Medrano.

The administration supports the accreditation process which can evidently be seen
in the creation of a Center for Accreditation and Research manned by very able person,
Dr. Dennis O. Dumrique who likewise already conducted research colloquia and in-charge
in the production of Research Journal, monograph series and monitors the submission of
the undergraduate theses of the College.

List of extension activities are also monitored and coordinated to the University
through Community Relations Office and to the Research, Extension Management Office;
in addition to the College extension programs conducted regularly.

A regular dialogue of administrators, faculty and student is conducted to ventilate

needs exchange of ideas and insights and thresh out existing problems. At the end of
