Curriculum implementation refers to how teachers deliver instruction and assessment through the use
of specified resources provided in a curriculum. Curriculum designs generally provide instructional
suggestions, scripts, lesson plans, and assessment options related to a set of objectives
. 1. Substitution – The current curriculum will be replaced or substituted by a new one. Sometimes, we
call this a complete overhaul. 2. Alteration – there is a minor change to the current or existing
curriculum. McNeil in 1990 categorized curriculum change as follows:
3. Perturbations – these are changes that are disruptive, but teachers have to adjust to them within a
fairly short time.
4. Restructuring – building a new structure would mean major change or modification in the school
system, degree program or educational system.
5. Value orientation – To McNeil, this is a type of curriculum change. Perhaps this classification will
respond to shift in the emphasis that the teacher provides which are not within the mission or vision of
the school or vice versa
Ornstein and Hunkins (1988) sum up these observations and view implementation as a separate
component in curriculum action cycle. It is the logical step once a programme has been developed and
piloted. However, they point out that implementation involves attempts to change individuals
knowledge, actions and attitudes.
Curriculum implementation process involves helping the learner acquire knowledge or experience. …
Curriculum implementation therefore refers to how the planned or officially designed course of study is
translated by the teacher into syllabuses, schemes of work and lessons to be delivered to students.
5. What is Kurt Levin’s theory on curriculum change? Describe the illustration on the change
process.
Kurt Levin’s Force Field Theory and Curriculum Change Kurt Levin (1951) • As the father of social
psychology explains the process of change, the model can be used to explain curriculum change and
implementation.
6. According to McNeil, what are the categories of curriculum change? Describe each change
1. Substitution--- replace the present with a new one.
2. Alteration--- introduce minor changes or modification on the current one.
3. Restructuring--- introduce major modification of the current curriculum.
4. Perturbation--- changes happen within a fairly short time.
5. Value Orientation--- respond to shift emphasis within a vision/mission of the school.
7. How many years should curriculum change be institutionalized to see its successful
implementation?
