Learning Objective: Learn about the glory of two urban civilization and
its relics that have been found
Uari-Bateswar
➢This archaeological site is so far the most
ancient site of Bangladesh.
➢Wari-Bateshwar, located in Belabo Upazila
of Narsingdi district, 70 kilometers
northeast of Dhaka, is about 2,500 years
old.
➢The town of Wari was lasted till 450 BC
➢The site has a unique significance in the
history of Bangladesh.
➢It is located on the bank of the old
Brahmaputra river which was a river port
and international commercial center.
❑It is said that the capital of the Gangaridhdhi was the Ganges. Gange was
the commercial center.
❑All researchers agree that the Uari Bateshwar was the ancient port and
business center.
❑It has been discovered from 50 archaeological sites in the Uari Bateshwar
region.

❑Wari-Bateshwar was the oldest city in Bangladesh. The Fort was the
capital of these large populations. It was developed and well-planned.

• About 2400 years ago, 18
Kilometre north of Bogra town,
Mahasthangar was built up on the
bank of the river Karatoa.
• Pundranagar (Mahasthangarh) is
the most important Buddhist
Archaeological Sites situated at
Bogra of Bangladesh.

• It was a vibrant administrative,
religioned & cultural center from
the 3rd century BC to the 12 th
century AD that is from the Mutual
Empire time to the Sena Dynasty
period.

• The city was rich in wealth and


resources, therefore was well
protected by fort wall and trench.
• An archeologist named Alexander
Cunningham surveyed
Mahasthangar in 1879 and he
anticipated that the founded
famous Mathasthangar lay hidden
under the soil here, after that the
archeological digging started

• City Walls, elaborate gates, palaces,


common dwellings, assembly halls,
temple, Viharas, shops, ponds& even
sunburned temples & Viharas
characterized the city.

spread his kingdom up to
Pundranagar.
• It is written in Brammi
script that an order was
passed to help the subjects
of Pundranagar with cash
and crops in times of
famines.
• It is also recorded that the
subjects would pay back
when their good days come
back.

• Pundranagar was a prosperous city
and it was the capital of
Pundrabardhan.
• It had connections with many Indian
cities and towns of Indian sub-
continent for commercial purposes.
• In 7th Century, the Chinese Priest and
Tourist Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) 20
Buddhist Viharas and 100 Brahmin
Temples in Pundranagar region.

• The cultural artifacts/relics obtained from the excavation results could be classified
under the following periods-heads:

First Period to seven period.


These periods can be classified as: post-Mauryan age, KushanGupta
periods, Gupta & late Gupta phase, PALA-SENA phase, PALA-SENA phase
etc.
During these phases large number of Buddhist establishments, beads
of terracotta, glass & semi-precious stones, terracotta balls, the
decorated cooking pots, the dishes and many others relics were found.
