Context Clues

The document discusses context clues, which are hints within a text that can help determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. There are two main types of context clues: definition and exemplification. Definition clues directly define the word, using phrases like "is called" or "means." Exemplification clues provide examples to illustrate the word's meaning, using words like "such as" or "for example." The document provides examples of context clues through definition and exemplification. It then describes several activities for students to practice identifying and using context clues to understand word meanings.

CONTEXT CLUES (DEFINITION and EXEMPLIFICATION)

Hello there, learners! How are you?

Very good! Welcome to my English Class!

It’s me again, Teacher Nailah, your Teacher for this session.

Before we start, make sure you have your self-learning module, notebook and your ballpen.

In your first quarter lesson, you have studied about finding the meaning of words using Online and
offline resources.

What if these are not available? Can you still find the meaning of unfamiliar words?

Hmm?

Of course you can by using Context Clues!

That’s what I am going to discuss today.

Context Clues through Definition and Exemplification.

Are you ready?

Let’s start!

What are Context Clues?

Context Clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph or a passage that a reader can use to
understand the meaning of a new or unfamiliar word.

There are types of Context Clues.

IDEAS – Inference, Definition, Example, Antonyms and Synonyms.

But we are going to focus on the Definition and Example.

A context clue is there to help you find out the meaning of unfamiliar word in a sentence. It could be
through giving the definition of the word or through giving examples.

Through DEFINITION, the unknown word is defined following its use or the author defines the word in
the sentence.

If the context clue is through Definition, it includes the words “That is” “It means” “refers to” and “Are
called”

Example:
Flouroscopy, examination with a fluoroscope, is a common practice.

This example is a context clue through DEFINITION. The words after the comma is the definition of the
word fluoroscopy.

Through EXEMPLIFICATION, specific examples are used to define the term or the author gives an
example of the word somewhere in the sentence or paragraph. In EXEMPLIFICATION, clue words are
“for instance, such as, and for example.

Example:

Celestial bodies, including the sun, moon and stars are fascinating.

This example is a context clue through Exemplification. You are given examples that would give you an
idea on the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Alright, let’s start our activities! Are you ready? Great!

your activity notebook.

Write your answers in your activity notebook.

And we are down to our Post-Assessment. We have 2 activities here.

A. Identify the meaning of each underlined word using context clues. Write the letter of your
answers in your activity notebook.
B. Identify the difficult word in the sentence. Provide the context clues used to unlock the meaning
of the words. Tell whether the use of the context clue is definition or exemplification. Do this in
your activity notebook.

Time is up!

And that is the end of our lesson for today.

Remember, context clues are hints that help readers to determine the meaning of a new or unfamiliar
word.

While context clues are useful reading tools, they can’t replace a dictionary or other online resources.

Right then, I hope you have learned a lot today. Thank you for your participation.

This has been Teacher Nailah, until next time! Bye!
