WHAT IS PROSTITUTION

Prostitution is the practice of engaging in


relatively indiscriminate sexual activity, in general
with someone who is not a spouse or a friend, in
exchange for immediate payment in money or
other valuables.
INTRODUCTION

In the time past prostitution was a crime especially in the Traditional African Society.
Women were forbidden to sell their bodies for money. Prostitution was indeed a taboo
in the traditional society. Women could be ostracized if found to be engaged in
prostitution in traditional village setting. The society then also frowned at promiscuous
behavior or lifestyle. No religion including paganism accepts sexual promiscuity. Of
recent due to civilization prostitution has been institutionalized, hence prostitutes are
no longer doing their heinous acts in the dark, but widely advertise themselves even in
abroad day light. They get several patronages even people from the high class,
politicians inclusive. There is no shame in prostitution it has become the part and parcel
of the societal way of living or life. Prostitution exists in so many ways. For illustration
there is a corporate prostitution especially among female bankers who use their bodies
to attract customers and clients to their banks.
CAUSES OF PROSTITUTION
✓Poverty: the biggest reason for prostitution is poverty; In most cases people go into
prostitution in order to have access to the basic necessities of life- food, shelter and clothing.
✓Existence of large families/ Family neglect: in large families some people always feel
neglected and deprived of love, therefore to get the attention they desire, they engage in
prostitution.
✓Sudden demise of the bread-winner in a family: some people are forced into prostitution
when the bread winner of the family departs this world. In order to live a comfortable life they
engage in prostitution.
✓Get rich quick syndrome/ Love of money: in other cases, some people are just obsessed in
getting rich, therefore they look for an easy way out by engaging in prostitution.
✓Hereditary: prostitution can also be in the lineage of an individual which naturally compels
them to prostitution.
✓Peer group influence: ones company, has a way of influencing a persons lifestyle. In order to
feel among a social group.
✓Absence of sex education: lack of sex education can also lead to prostitution
✓Forced rape or sexual assault: The unfair action of rape sometimes leads to prostitution
✓Trafficking: some people are being sold into prostitution by either their family members,
friends, or people who have promised to assist them in one way or the other.
✓Lack of self control: some people engage in prostitution because they lack self control.
✓Drug Abuse: constant abuse of hard drugs like cocaine, marijuana, amongst others can also
lead to prostitution.
✓Sex for enjoyment: apart from economic issues, some people engage in prostitution because
they just enjoy sex with different partners.
CONSEQUENCES OF PROSTITUTION

✓unwanted pregnancy: Almost every prostitute had been pregnant once in their
lives, some had kept the pregnancy while other had aborted them.
✓ovarian issues: in the process of countless abortions some prostitutes have had
ovarian issues and have lost their wombs; making it impossible for them to ever
conceive
✓unwanted children: for those who go through with the delivery, the children are
often neglected, and in some cases gradually become incorporated in the business
✓ HIV/AIDS : apart from HIV, prostitutes are also exposed to different diseases
and STI’S which has led to different health challenges
✓physical, psychological and social issues in respect of customers' behavior like
refusing of payment, kidnapping and sexual assault, beating, forcefully abusive
acts, violence, drug abusing, threatening, and sexual abuse.
✓Lack of pride and dignity: In many instances prostitutes are not respected in a
society and are often viewed as people without good morals
✓Difficulty in getting married: most prostitutes find it difficult to settle down, as
most men often go for the decent and moral ladies. Also once in the business it
bcomes difficult to pull out, as it becomes a habit.
