UNIT 1: SHAPES
Lesson 3
I. Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to gain the following:
1. Knowledge
Vocabulary:
nest, orange
Structures:
Nn is for nest.
Oo is for orange
2. Language skills
Make proper sounds of the the letters Nn and Oo in isolation and in words.
3. Core competencies & Personal qualities
Building up interests and good habits in learning English
Building up independent-working characteristics to be a life-long learner
Being supportive and collaborative in interactions with others
Demonstrating communicative, team-working, and solving-problem skills
through learning activities
II. Teaching aids:
Teacher’s aids: student’s book and teacher’s book, class CDs, flashcards, IWB
software, projector/interactive whiteboard/TV.
Students’ aids: Student’s book, notebook, workbook.
III. Procedures:
Time Steps/Activities Organization
5’ Warm-up Teacher –
Sing the song “What shape is it?” whole class

Have students sing and draw the shapes in the air.
Option 1:
"Magic finger" game Teacher –
Divide the class into pairs. whole class/
Have Student A draw a shape with their finger on Student B's pair work
back.
Have Student B try to guess which shape it is.
Have students swap roles and repeat.
Option 2:
“Hangman” game Teacher –
Topic: Shapes whole class/
Split the class into two teams. groupwork
Draw the hangman board and draw blank spaces for the word work
the teacher wants them to guess.
Have each team guess a letter. If they guess it correctly then
they get one point for each letter in the word. If they get it
wrong then draw a head, body, 2 legs and 2 arms.
When the teacher draws all the parts of body the game is
over and the teacher starts a new game.
The winner is the one with the most points at the end of the
last puzzle.

Sing “The Yoga Alphabet” song Teacher –

5. Trace the letters. Listen. Point. Say. (Track 10) Teacher –
Student’s book closed. whole class/
Put the Phonics Flashcards up on the board. individuals/
Point to the letter Nn and say: This is the letter /en/ and its pair work
sound is /n/. Have students repeat after the teacher.
Point to the letter again and say: /en/ is for N. Have students
repeat after the teacher. Then point to the picture of the nest
and say: /n/ is for nest. Have students repeat after the
teacher.
Write the uppercase letter N on the board to demonstrate its
formation.
With teacher’s back to the students, form the letter N in the
air. Ask the students to copy the teacher.
Repeat with the lowercase letter n.
Follow the same procedure and present the letter Oo (/əʊ/)
and its sound (/ɒ/).
Student’s book open.
Have students trace the letters.
Teacher –
Go around the class providing any necessary help.

Point to and elicit the sounds of the letters and the words.
Play audio. Have students listen, point and repeat chorally
and individually.

5’ Follow – up
Option 1: Teacher-
Game “Thumbs Up or Down” Whole class
Show a phonics card one at a time and have students identify
the sound or the word teacher says by putting their thumbs up
or down.
Repeat the activity with other phonics cards.
E.g.
Teacher: (hold up the orange phonics card) nest.
Students: (putting their thumbs down).
Teacher: orange
Students: (putting their thumbs up).
Option 2: Teacher-
Phonics posters Whole class
Tell children you are going to make a phonics poster.
Hand out sheets of paper and colored pencils.
Children choose the sound of ‘n’ or ‘o’.
They must draw pictures of one or two words with their
chosen sound and color them. Somewhere on the poster they
should write the sound.
Put the phonics posters around the classroom.
