I am analysing an Industrial Building in Staad.pro. Its a Power House structure of a Hydro-Power
Project.

The structure is in Earthquake Zone V. The structure contains steel Roof Truss supported on RCC
Columns. In My first step I have designed the Steel roof truss for wind load. Now, for designing the
beam columns I have applied the earthquake load.
In the Power House there is a 150/25 t EOT Crane.

After applying DL, LL, EL/WL I am stuck in the Crane load part.

Maximum Static AXle Load (From Manufacturer) = 50t / axle

1.Shall I apply a moving Load on the Gantry Girder or shall I apply Point Loads on each column
with a definite Impact factor.

2. How generally Gantry girders and columns supported them are analysed and Designed in Staad.

3. Which Method can save my time.

Your Suggestions would be of great guidance to me.

Thanks & Regards

While applying gantry girder loads... we apply the maximum reaction in gantry girder on
columns...in case of eccentricity(due to corbel) moment due to ecc. is also added...

the procedure for obtaining max reaction is

Joined: 27 Feb 2010 1) Calculate the maximum reaction of crane girder on gantry girder(please refer any steel book,
Posts: 88 Steel structures by Dr. N. Subramanian is very good )
Location: Hyderabad

2) Calculate the max reaction at support of gantry girder due to crane reaction...u can find in the
above book the position of loads to get max. shear

3) also calculate the horizontal forces along the rails and across the rails and incorporate the same
in the model.

General Sponsor LOADS.

Dear Sefian,

Use AISC Design Guide 7 for applying CRANE LOADS. This is the most complete Design Guide
on Industrial Structures with Crane Loads. Should answer most of your questions. Then go
and model it in STAAD/PRO as required in this Design Guide.
That part is easy.

GIRDER AND CHECK FOR DEFLECTION AS PER AISC .

Q2.ON THE RCC BRACKETS , WE HAVE TO GIVE ANCHOR BOLTS TO ACOMMODATE GANTRY
GIDRER WITHOUT FAIL , FOR THE RECTION WHICH IS COMING OVER THE RCC BRACKET .

Q3. FOR SUCH TYPE OF COMPLICATED JOBS EVEN THOUGH WE USE GOOD AVAILABLE
SOFTWARES ( STAAD PRO IS ENOUGH AS FAR AS I KNOWN ) , IT IS BETTER TO CROSS CHECK
MANUALLY OR BY PEPARING IN EXCEL SHEETS

NB. : FOR SUCH TYE OF ANALYSIS BAY SPACING ALSO IMPORTANT, AND TAKE THE CRANE DATA
FROM THE CUSTOMER , ALSO ASK HIS REQUIRMENT IF ANY IN FUTURE ,
AS IT IS NOT RESTING ON STEEL COLUMNS , IT GOING TO REST ON RCC COLUMNS ,
LATER IT IS DIFFICULT TO STRENGTHEN IT.

PLZ DO CONCENTARE TO CALCULATE HORIZONTAL AND VRTL IMPACT FACTORS.

When an enemy can be killed with bullet, it is folly to use gun fire /tank fire/air-strike
on him.

For column design , the critical condition is when gantry crane is at the column
bracket . The reactions will be maximum and can be input as point loads in
Joined: 26 Jan 2003 vertical , lateral and longitudinal directions based on vertical load with impact & braking
Posts: 2212 effects .Effect of eccentricity of load from bracket to column cente-rline needs
also to be taken in form of moment.

Using moving loads in staad will give reactions for all positions of gantry on
G/Girder span but critical values for column design are one's at column
locations.

Posts: 20 I am first analysing the Gantry beam and the support reactions is thus obtained. After obtaining
this I am applying this load on Columns in Staad.

Is it the correct method.
