HYPNOSIS

Hypnosis is a state of consciousness in which a person is especially susceptible to suggestion. It originated from "Animal Magnetism" and Mesmerism in the late 18th century and was later termed "Hypnotism" by James Braid, who is considered the "Father of Modern Hypnotism". The hypnotic induction process typically involves focusing attention, relaxation, acceptance of suggestions, and using vivid imagination. Only about 80% of people can be hypnotized and only 40% are good subjects. Hypnosis can potentially alter perceptions, relieve pain, and change behaviors, but does not give superhuman strength or reliably enhance memory.

Steps in Hypnotic
Hypnotic Induction
1. The hypnotist tells the
(Druckman & Bjork, 1994): person to focus on what is
being said.

2. The person is told to relax

and feel tired.

3. The hypnotist tells the

person to “let go” and accept
suggestions easily.

4. The person is told to use

vivid imagination.
Hypnotic Susceptibility

the degree to which a person is a good hypnotic

subject, often makes use of a series of ordered
suggestions.
DID YOU KNOW?
People can be hypnotized when active and alert,
but only if they are willing to be hypnotized.

Only 80 percent of all people can be hypnotized,

and only 40 percent are good hypnotic subjects.
Examples of Items That Would Appear
TABLE 4.2 on a Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale

1. Movement of the body back and forth

2. Closing eyes and unable to open them Based on
3. Fingers locked together Hilgard, E,
4. One arm locked into position
5. Responding to posthypnotic suggestion

6. Loss of memory for events during the session Susceptibility,
7. Unable to state one’s own name 1965.
8. Seeing or hearing nonexistent stimuli
Basic Suggestion Effect
(Kihlstrom, 1985)

The tendency to act as though their behavior

is automatic and out of their control
1. DISSOCIATION
- one part of the mind is aware of
actions/activities taking place, while
the “hypnotized” part is not

FACT OR BLUFF
START
Round 1
Hypnosis can create amnesia for whatever
happens during the hypnotic session, at least
for a brief time (Bowers & Woody, 1996).

FACT OR MYTH?
FACT!
( Hypnotherapy can change “how you remember”
the memory, not the “raw” memory itself)
Round 2
Hypnosis cannot give people
superhuman strength.

FACT OR MYTH?
FACT!
(People may use their full strength under
hypnosis, but it is no more than they had
before hypnosis.)
Round 3
Hypnosis can reliably enhance
memory.

FACT OR MYTH?
BLUFF!
(There’s an increased risk of false-memory
retrieval because of the suggestible state
hypnosis creates.)
Round 4
Hypnosis can relieve pain by allowing a
person to remove conscious attention
from the pain (Holroyd, 1996).

FACT OR MYTH?
FACT!
(Hypnosis may be a helpful nondrug therapy
to reduce pain in chronic conditions like
arthritis and fibromyalgia)
Round 5
Hypnosis can regress people back to
childhood.

FACT OR MYTH?
BLUFF!
(Although people may act like
children, they do and say things children
would not.)
Round 6
Hypnosis can alter sensory perceptions.

FACT OR MYTH?
FACT!
(Smell, hearing, vision, time sense, and
the ability to see visual illusions can all be
affected by hypnosis.)
Round 7
Hypnosis can regress people to some
“past life.”

FACT OR MYTH?
FACT!!
FACT
(Hypnosis may be a helpful in visiting a
person's past self)
Round 8
Hypnosis cannot help people relax in
situations that normally would cause
them stress, such as flying on an
airplane (Muhlberger et al., 2001).

FACT OR MYTH?
BLUFF!!
BLUFF
(Hypnosis may be a helpful in making people
relaxed)
Round 9
Hypnosis can help
change physical behavior such as eating
habits or helping people to stop smoking

FACT OR MYTH?
BLUFF!!
BLUFF
(Physical behavior is harder to change, and
that is why hypnosis is not as effective.)
