Module 1 for ENGLISH 10

Reflexive Pronouns – are those pronouns formed by adding “ –self to singular


and ‘ – selves to plural possessives to produce the following : myself, yourself, herself,
himself, itself, oneself and ourselves, yourselves, themselves. They are used after
action words or prepositions to indicate the same persons or things as the subjects.
In other words, the reflexive pronoun reflects back to the subject. A reflexive pronoun
can be used as the direct object, indirect object, or object of a preposition in a sentence.

Reflexive Pronouns

Singular Plural

First Person : I - myself We: ourselves

Second Person : You – You : yourselves


yourself

Third Person : He -himself They : themselves


She :herself
It :itself

Uses and Examples of Reflexive Pronouns:


A. As a Direct Object- when the pronoun receives the action from the verb.
Examples : We do not always make ourselves practice what we preach.
Sheila is reviewing herself to pass the CPA board exam.
Jack decided to reward himself with a dinner out.
The puppy saw itself in the mirror.
He tried to be himself and not to be like Michael Jackson all the
time.
B. As Indirect Object – when the pronoun recognizes to whom or for whom of the
action of the verb is accomplished.
Examples : Arnold cooked himself a dinner.
I bought myself a new watch.
C. As an Object of the Preposition – when the pronoun comes after a
preposition or inside a prepositional phrase.
Examples : The students cleaned the room by themselves.
Mother baked a lasagna for herself.
My grandfather can no longer able to feed himself.
D. As an Intensifier
Examples: I, myself wished some luck and dived in the pool.
Joan wrote the poem herself.

ACTIVITIES :
A. 1 Encircle the reflexive pronoun in each sentence below. Draw an arrow back
to the subject it is reflecting.

1. I dressed myself this morning.


2. You may serve yourself to any of the snacks on the table.
3. The new robotics toys can put themselves away.
4. I used a video to teach myself how to knit.
5. The television uses a timer to turn itself off after one hour.
6. The little girl learned how to dressed herself for school.
7. When I saw myself in the mirror, I realized that I had paint on my cheek.
8. When you save money in the bank, it’s like you are paying yourself.
9. We ate so much pumpkin pie that we made ourselves sick.
10. One of their dogs spent hours licking itself.

A. 2 Supply the correct reflexive pronoun in each of the following sentences and write
on the blank before each number if it is direct object, indirect object, object of the
preposition or intensifiers.
Example : Object of the preposition This accident was my fault. I feel very
disappointed with myself.

ASSIGNMENT:

1. Do the activities in your book pages 15-16.

2. Write sentences using the following reflexive pronouns as : direct object, indirect
object, object of the preposition and intensifier.
