Amplifier Performance Parameters and Classification

This document discusses different types of amplifiers. It defines key parameters like voltage gain, current gain, power gain, input resistance, output resistance, bandwidth, and frequency response. It then classifies amplifiers based on their output parameters, frequency range of input signals, position of operating point, and coupling type. Common types discussed are audio frequency, radio frequency, Class A, B, AB, and C amplifiers as well as RC, transformer, and direct coupled amplifiers.

2. CLASSIFY AMPLIFIER

AEL/APhir 2
 Pre-requisite
 Amplifier characteristics
 Classification of amplifier

AEL/APhir 3
 Voltage Gain ,Current gain and Power Gain

The gain of an amplifier is the ratio of output quantity to

the input quantity.
• Current gain (AI) = Io/Ii
• Voltage gain (AV) = Vo/Vi
• Power Gain (AP) = Po/Pi

 Always expressed in decibels(dB)

• Gain in dB = 20log10(Vo/Vi)
• Gain: Infinite(∞)
• Power Gain in dB = 10 log10(Vo/Vi)

AEL/APhir 4
 Voltage Gain ,Current gain and Power
Gain
 The gain of an amplifier has logarithmic
unit as human ear response is
logarithmic.

AEL/APhir 5
 Example Find the gain in db in the following cases :
 (i) Voltage gain of 30 (ii) Power gain of 100
 Solution. (i) Voltage gain = 20 log10( 30 ) = 29.54 db
 (ii) Power gain = 10 log10 (100 db) = 20 db

Multistage Amplifier-I/APAhir 6
 Input Resistance
• It is the equivalent resistance seen looking into the
input terminals of an amplifier with output terminals
are short circuited.
• Ri: Infinite (∞)

 Output Resistance
• It is the equivalent resistance seen looking into the
output terminals of an amplifier. with input terminals
are short circuited.
• Ro: Zero (0)

AEL/APhir 7
 The relationship between gain and
frequency is defined by a curve, that is
called as frequency response .

AEL/APhir 8
AEL/APhir 9
 Bandwidth:

• Range of frequencies over which gain of amplifier is

constant or

• Range of frequencies over which gain of amplifier is

satisfactory

• B.W: Infinite (∞)/Large

AEL/APhir 10
 Bandwidth:
• Difference between Higher cut off frequency(fH) and
lower cut off frequency(fL)

• B.W=fH – fL
 These -3dB corner frequency points define the
frequency at which the output gain is reduced to
70.71% of its maximum value.
 Then we can correctly say that the -3dB point is also
the frequency at which the systems gain has reduced to
0.707 of its maximum value.
 Frequency Response -3dB Point
