CHAPTER I

Rationale

This Covid-19 pandemic has affected all of us for the past

1 and a half years. It made a lot of people to lose their jobs,

Families to lose their loved ones, it has affected student’s in

their academics and had made worse in a lot of people.

One of the things that has been affected are the social

interaction of people, ever since the pandemic has started a

lot of cities and provinces initiated countless lock downs and

different types of Quarantines in order to minimize face-to-

face interactions among people especially teenagers. It has

brought about a state that a teenager’s interactions with

other humans have become limited to that of their immediate

family.

Social skills are essential in building both personal and

professional relationships. Demonstrating strong interpersonal

skills can help you accomplish career goals, contribute to

company achievements, perform well during the hiring process


and expand your professional network. Understanding and

improving your social skills can benefit you in every area of life.

In this article, we discuss what social skills are, why they are

important and how you can improve them with examples.

The researcher’s aim in this study is to determine on how

much Covid-19 Pandemic has affected the social skills of

teenagers aging from 13 to 17 due to lockdown restrictions

Objectives of the study

General objectives:

To determine how the pandemic had affected the

communication and interaction skills of teenagers.

Specific objectives:

 Identifying what are the events that are heavily affecting

the social skills of teenagers

 This is to inform how important these skills are and how

it could benefit us in the future


Significance of the study

Teenagers: to let them know the importance and benefits of

social skills

To Others: This study will make people aware what the

continuous lock downs are affecting this skill

Statement of the problem

This research focuses on the social skills of teenagers during

pandemic and it aims to answer the following questions :

1. What are factors affecting this certain skill?

2. How are teenagers communicating during lock downs?

3. Are they having a hard time communicating with other

people in face-to-face scenario?

4. How is the Pandemic is affecting their emotional

development?
Review of Related Literature

This section of the research contains studies and literature

that are related to this study and may support and provide

validation for the findings in Chapter III.

The Covid-19 pandemic had made lives of others difficult

especially young children and teenagers, they had been

isolated at their homes due to the restrictions opposed by the

government therefore not being able to interact with people

besides their family.

A lot of parents fear social skill loss for their children due to

the reason of not being to interact with people. A research of

Avi Wolfman-Arent says that a 10th grade girl had changed,

she was once an extrovert now seems apathetic according to

her mother.

A Quote of Amy Learmonth says that “Young children are

learning the basics of being social beings, and their parents

and siblings can provide most of the input they need, while
older children and adolescents are learning to navigate

complex social groups of peers” this indicates that not just

teenagers are affected by isolation but also young children, it

also has its affects on their social development

Hypothesis

The hypothesis of this research is to determine the effects of

lock downs to young teenagers and their social and

emotional development

Definition of Terms

COVID-19- is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-

2 virus.
Lock down -a state of isolation or restricted access instituted

as a security measure.
