Using Your Calculator For Stats

Using STAT mode on the Casio fx-83GT PLUS calculator allows you to find statistical values like the mean, variance, and standard deviation of data sets. To enter single data values, use the 1-VAR option under STAT mode. For frequency tables, STAT mode with frequency turned on can be used. Linear regression is also available to find the equation of a line of best fit. Practice problems are included to apply these statistical techniques.

Using STAT mode on the Casio fx-83GT PLUS (and associated models)

STAT mode

If the calculator is in STAT mode it will say STAT at the top. You will find functions such as
fractions may be different in this mode.

To return to the normal mode, press MODE then 1: COMP.

Finding the mean, variance and standard deviation of a set of data (not in a table)

Frequency needs to be off for this, as we are not using a table. Press SHIFT then SETUP, then
down, then 3: STAT. Choose 2: OFF. (If frequency is left on, you will need to ensure the
frequency column is filled with 1s)

To enter the data:

Press MODE then 2: STAT, then 1: 1-VAR.

Input the pieces of data, using the = button to store values. The data should appear in a column.
Remember to press = after the last piece of data has been entered.

When the data has been entered, press ON or AC to clear.

To find the mean, variance or standard deviation of the data you have just entered:

Press SHIFT then 1 (See STAT is written in yellow above the 1 key) Press 4: Var then either:

 1: n (This tells you how many pieces of data have been entered)
 2: x̄ (This gives the mean)
 3: σx (This gives the standard deviation of the numbers you have entered. Square this
to get the variance)
 4: sx (If the numbers you have entered are a sample of a whole population, sx is an
unbiased estimator of the population standard deviation. Square this to get an unbiased
estimator for the population variance)

Finding the mean, variance and standard deviation from a frequency table

Frequency needs to be on for this. Press SHIFT then SETUP, then down, then 3: STAT. Choose
1: ON.

To enter the data:

Press MODE then 2: STAT, then 1: 1-VAR. Input the data in the table, using the left and
right arrows to navigate and the = button to store values. If no frequency is entered it will
automatically say 1 in this column.

Finding the mean, variance and standard deviation is the same as in the bullet points above.

Finding the mean, variance and standard deviation from a grouped frequency table

Follow the steps for the section above but when entering values in the x column, find the
midpoint of each corresponding group and enter this.
Practice
Practice using your calculator and the notes above to calculate the following:
Linear regression
Press MODE then 2: STAT, then 2: A+BX. Enter the paired data into the table, using the =
button to store values. When the data is entered, clear using ON or AC.

To find the PMCC (r) or the regression line press SHIFT then 1, then choose 5: Reg.

 1: A will give the A value in y=A + Bx

 2: B will give the B value in y=A + Bx
 3: r will give the PMCC
