NHS-FPX4000 Developing a Health Care Perspective

Introduction

In the healthcare sector, there are diverse issues which arise affecting the normal

operations of practitioners. On the same note, these issues may arise affecting the levels of

interactions that the practitioners exhibit with their patients as well as clients. Sometimes, these

issues may bring about additional problems and dilemmas from an ethical perspective. Ethical

dilemmas continue to arise in the healthcare sector calling for the inclusion of not only the moral

obligations of practitioners but also the prevailing legal solutions and frameworks. Through the

exploration of such problems, it is possible for the respective practitioners to create a high level

intervention which in turn would be used to facilitate ethical, moral and legal structures leading

to better outcomes in the process. This project is built on the issues of ethics and dilemmas as far

as maintaining a balance between the general practice and the religious or cultural beliefs of a

given community. In most cases, medical practitioners face diverse challenges when dealing with

patients who are guided and driven by religious beliefs. Foregoing the general practice for the

religious beliefs of the patients may violate their rights as beneficiaries of care in the country.

The case study

This project is based on the analysis of the case study involving Piper and the anti-

vaccination group as well as parents of children who are being protected against measles

(Capella University, n.d.). Piper works for a not for profit entity which is engaged in the

provision of care to the population within East Africa. While she loves doing her work, she has

faced challenges during her operations and giving out vaccines. Out of the 78 confirmed cases,

73 of them were not vaccinated. While heard immunity was one of the main challenges affecting
NHS-FPX4000 DEVELOPING A HEALTH CARE PERSPECTIVE 4

her work, the community was led by an anti-vaccination group which spread fliers containing

misinformation about the effectiveness and role played by the vaccine offered by the entity. The

misinformation offered claimed that the vaccine would lead to more cases of autism among the

children. On the same note, many parents in the region did not want their children to receive the

vaccine since they claimed it would lead to autism or complications affecting their children. The

organization however, has continued to improve vaccination since it reported offering twice as

many doses as opposed to the previous years (Capella University, n.d.). The primary issue of

concern however, is how Piper will counter the anti-vaccination group and communicate with the

parents on the benefits of the vaccination program on the health of their children while at the

same time respecting their cultural and religious beliefs.

The issue

From an ethical dimension, the case above presents various issues which in this case may

affect the credibility of the outcomes achieved in the long run. For instance, the primary issue of

concern for Piper is the way to handle the problem created by the ant vaccination group which is

spreading misinformation about the potential connection between the drugs offered and the

prevalence of autism. The communities in this case have continued to report a rising trend in the

cases of autism. The provision of the drug has been captured through misinformation on its

connection with such cases.

Piper and her organization are responsible for ensuring that the target community is

aware of the potential benefits that the process and program will have on their children.

Additionally, Piper needs to ensure that she maintains the desired levels of connection with the

parents while at the same time guaranteeing maximum respect for their beliefs and desires.
NHS-FPX4000 DEVELOPING A HEALTH CARE PERSPECTIVE 5

On the same note, Piper needs to ensure that the information offered by the activist group

is based on valid evidence hence will reduce and probably eliminate the issues of

misinformation. While misinformation remains one of the main issues affecting the community,

Piper must communicate and educate the parents of the children about the benefits associated

with measles vaccination. Further, while Piper will need to respect and observe the views of the

parents, she also will be required to ensure that she maintains and promotes health among the

target populations in line with the requirements of her career and the healthcare sector as a whole

from an ethical dimension.

Applying ethical decision making model

When looking at the case provided above, the main issues of concern which Piper will

need to address fall into the ethical decision making process. Addressing ethics in the case shows

that there are diverse issues which may affect the normal operations carried out by the nonprofit

organization through Piper and the community as a whole. The issue of conflict is based on the

perceived connection between measles vaccination and the occurrence of autism disorder.

Therefore, the use of an ethical decision making model will help in ensuring that the organization

makes the right selection and implements the desired actions to benefit the community and boost

health (Capella University, n.d.). The selected decision making model is comprised of three main

components.

1. Moral awareness

2. Moral judgment

3. Ethical behavior
NHS-FPX4000 DEVELOPING A HEALTH CARE PERSPECTIVE 6

Each of these components plays a crucial role in influencing the outcomes achieved when

considering a set of alternatives as far as ethics is concerned. The first component defines the

ability to understand the existence of a moral dilemma in a given case (Stahl & Coeckelbergh,

2016). Moral judgment plays a crucial role in that it helps in the determination of the right

actions and alternatives to select based on a high level analysis of the available options. Also,

this component allows the affected parties to critically analyze the presented options based on

their effects and perceived outcomes. The last component which is ethical behavior reflects on

the course of action selected and implemented (Capella University, n.d.). The course of action

selected in this content should be informed by the analysis of the current options which are

presented through the case mentioned above.

When looking at the context of moral awareness, Piper needs to establish the truth in the

allegations that are offered by the ant vaccination group in the community. Piper established that

the information given is not correct and hence is misleading to the community. When looking at

the case of moral judgment, Piper understands that vaccination is the best option to take since it

will lead to the health of the greater community. On the same note, she understands that

implementing the decision will require the interactions of the major stakeholders in the

community such as the parents and the other practitioners stationed within the region. The final

aspect to address is ethical behavior. While Piper may opt to educate the community about the

benefits of the vaccine, it is vital for her to respect the views and perceptions of the parents about

the issue. Therefore, the ultimate actions to take involve first educating the community and

parents about the program and its benefits to the health outcomes of their children. Providing the

correct information will help the community to make rational decisions about vaccination of

their children in the long run. This decision is influenced by ethics and the prevailing regulations
NHS-FPX4000 DEVELOPING A HEALTH CARE PERSPECTIVE 7

of ensuring that the actions performed promote health as opposed to bringing harm to the

affected parties (De Roubaix, 2016).

Role of communication

Communication is a vital part in the process. For instance, Piper understands that she

needs to connect with the community beyond the ordinary communication. The community faces

a challenge and dilemma in the selection of the right decisions to make based on the provision of

misinformation by the anti-vaccination group and the company led by Piper. Piper in this case

can be successful in communicating with the community through the use of the other members

of her team. Using community religious leaders among other major stakeholders will play a

crucial role in the improvement of the overall levels of outcomes achieved in the process.

Further, Piper needs to create a framework that eliminates the barriers to interaction with the

parents. Educating the parents and the general community as a whole will boost their levels of

awareness about the issues presented in the context and their effects on the health of the children.

Proposed solution to the issue

From the analysis of the issues presented above, there are diverse options which can be

selected and implemented. However, the ultimate solution for the case and dilemma in the

context reflects on the ability of Piper to communicate with the community so as to eliminate

doubts and supply the parents with correct information about the vaccine. This approach will

help Piper and her company to reduce the effects brought about by the anti-vaccination group on

the program offered to the children. Also, the firm will be at a better position to handle the

arising challenges created by the resistance to accept the vaccine as represented by the parents.

Conclusion

Based on the information given above, it is essential for Piper to consider the role of

education and awareness on the health outcomes of the affected children. In this case, Piper will

need to communicate with the community members to ensure that they understand the effects

associated with the use of the vaccine and the potential outcomes to expect in the long run. Using

an ethical decision making model will help Piper to increase the chances of achieving better

outcomes as far as the selection and implementation of the correct solution is concerned.
