Module 1 - Fluid Machinery

This module introduces the principles of fluid flow. It defines key fluid properties and terms. The module objectives are to define fluid properties, determine fluid flow types using the Reynolds number, derive head of fluid using Bernoulli's equation, determine a pump's total dynamic head, and solve fluid flow problems. Topic areas include fluid definitions, properties, flow types, continuity and Bernoulli equations, and head. Sample problems demonstrate calculations for fluid properties and forces on bodies in fluids.

Fluid Machinery 1.

1INTRODUCTION
Module 1 – Principles of Fluid Flow

LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
After studying this module, you should be able to:

1. Define the basic properties of fluid;

2. Determine the types of flow of fluid using
the Reynolds number;
3. Derive the three forms of head of fluid and
the total dynamic head (TDH) or external
head of pumps using Bernoulli’s Equation;
4. Determine the total dynamic head of a
pump; and
5. Solve problems involving the principles of
fluid flow.

Module 1 reviews the principles of fluid flow

TOPIC including the basic fluid properties such as density,
OUTLINE specific volume, specific weight, and viscosity. It
also deals with the Reynolds number, types of flows,

2. Definition of terms
3. Properties of fluids

OVERVIEW

Module 1 serves as a brief discussion about the

basic principles of Fluid Machinery. It gives us an
overview to the properties of fluids. This module is
good for 3 hours lecture.

SAMPLE PROBLEMS

1.A reservoir of glycerin has a mass of 1200kg

and a volume of 0.952 m3. Find the glycerin’s
weight, mass density, specific weight, and
specific gravity.

2.The weight of a body is 100lb. Determine a) its

weight in newtons, b) its mass in kilogram, and
c) the rate of acceleration (ft/s 2) and (m/s2) if a
net force of 50 lbs. is applied to the body.
